Your motorcycle license does not exempt you from the standard process for obtaining a car license. You must start with a Class D Beginner's Permit. For full SC permit details, see the South Carolina Learner Permit guide.
Once SCDMV adds the new driving class to your record, the credential reflects the classes you are authorized to hold. During the beginner-permit stage, follow the restrictions that apply to the class of vehicle you are operating.
No automatic waiver comes from Class M experience. Car and motorcycle privileges are separate, so complete the Class D permit and testing steps that apply to the car license.
Holding a motorcycle licence does not shorten the Class D permit holding period. SCDMV treats vehicle classes separately with no overlap or waiver.
See the South Carolina learner's permit guide for complete requirements.
During the 180-day Class D permit hold you can continue to ride your motorcycle legally under your existing Class M licence. Both credentials are tracked separately.
| Class D (Car) Permit Rules | Class M (Motorcycle) Permit Rules |
|---|---|
| Never drive alone. A licensed supervisor (21+, 1+ year experience) must be in the front seat. | Can ride alone, but only during daylight hours (6 AM–6 PM, or 8 PM during DST). |
| Drive 6 AM–midnight with any qualified supervisor. Midnight–6 AM requires a parent/guardian supervisor. | No passengers allowed. |
| Passenger limits are based on the supervisor's judgment and vehicle capacity. | Riders under 21 must wear a helmet and eye protection. |
A new driver in Charleston applied for both permits at once. They passed both written tests in one visit but failed to understand the different passenger rules, receiving a ticket for carrying a friend on their motorcycle while holding only a permit.
Can you apply for Class D and Class M beginner's permits at the same time? SCDMV can process more than one non-commercial class, but each class has its own test and restrictions. Make sure you understand which privilege you actually hold before operating either vehicle.
Apply for the Class D permit as early as possible since the 180-day hold is fixed. Book the car road test the day you become eligible to avoid long appointment waits.
The two driving classes are separate. Renew or restore the motorcycle privilege under its own rules; an active Class D permit does not keep an expired Class M privilege valid.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"

"I was struggling with the specific road rules of my state until I used Shoro. The flashcards are a game changer for quick revision before the actual exam."

"The readiness score gives you so much confidence. I knew exactly when I was ready to take the test. Highly recommend Shoro for anyone nervous about their exam."
