South Carolina Beginner's Permit Driving Restrictions: Supervision, Night Driving, Passengers, and Highway Rules

A South Carolina Beginner's Permit is not a license to drive alone.

Supervision as a core permit restriction

A South Carolina beginner's permit does not allow solo driving. A qualified supervising driver must be present whenever the permit holder drives; use the dedicated Supervisor Requirements guide for the exact age, license, experience, and relationship rules.

Can I drive alone after I turn 18?

No. Turning 18 does not convert a beginner's permit into a driver's license. The supervision restriction continues until the permit holder becomes licensed.

What you can and cannot do with a South Carolina permit

You can practice on public roads, including highways, with the required supervisor. You cannot drive alone. During daytime and evening practice, the supervisor must meet the normal beginner's-permit rule; midnight to 6 AM uses the narrower qualified-individual rule described below.

Can I use Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or hands-free navigation?

South Carolina's Hands-Free Act focuses on holding or supporting a mobile device while driving. Hands-free or voice-operated navigation can be used without holding the phone. Keep the device mounted or otherwise hands-free and avoid handling it while the vehicle is moving.

Time-of-day and night driving restrictions in South Carolina

From 6 AM to midnight, the normal beginner's-permit supervisor rule applies: a licensed driver age 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience must sit beside you.

From midnight to 6 AM, the accompanying driver must be a licensed individual who falls within one of the qualifying categories listed in S.C. Code §56-1-100(A)(1)-(7). The rule is not limited to a parent or legal guardian, and Form 447-CM is not a list of approved late-night supervisors.

Who can supervise me between midnight and 6 AM?

Use the §56-1-100(A)(1)-(7) qualified-individual rule. Do not assume that any licensed friend age 21+ qualifies for this overnight period simply because that person can supervise during the day.

Passenger limits and driving with friends on an SC permit

South Carolina's beginner's-permit statute does not set the same two-passenger-under-21 cap that applies at the conditional/special restricted license stage. A qualified supervisor must still be seated beside the permit holder, and every occupant must follow seat-belt and child-restraint laws.

The later conditional-license passenger rule is a separate graduated-license restriction, so do not apply it automatically to the beginner's-permit stage.

Freeway and interstate driving with a South Carolina permit

South Carolina does not create a separate beginner's-permit ban on interstate or freeway practice. If you drive on a highway, the normal supervision rule still applies.

For safety, build up gradually from lower-speed roads before practicing in heavier or faster traffic.

Can You Drive to School or Work Alone With a Beginner's Permit?

No. A beginner's permit does not let you drive alone to school, work, or another destination. A qualified supervisor must remain with you as required by the permit rules.

The Hands-Free Act is a separate rule: it prohibits holding or supporting a mobile device while driving, with a $100 first offense and a $200 fine plus two points for a second or subsequent offense within three years.

What happens when permit restrictions are violated

Consequences depend on the specific violation and may include fines, points, or suspension. Keep detailed solo-driving charges and enforcement scenarios on the dedicated Driving Alone Penalty guide rather than treating one penalty as universal for every permit restriction.

Do South Carolina beginner's permit restrictions apply in a private driveway or private parking lot?

The beginner's-permit statute is written around operation on public highways. Private-property situations can depend on the location and other applicable laws, so private property should not be treated as a blanket exception.
