Rhode Island requires a minimum 6-month permit hold before you can take the road test if you are under 18. Adults 18 and older must hold a permit for 30 days. Missing the waiting period disqualifies you from booking the test. See shoro.ai Rhode Island Learner Permits.
Your first-road-test waiting period depends on age:
| Applicant | First road-test eligibility | Separate retest wait after failure |
|---|---|---|
| Under 18 | Hold the Limited Instruction Permit at least 6 months, complete 50 supervised hours including 10 at night, and meet the preceding-six-month clean-record rule | 30 days after first failure; 90 after second; 180 after third or later failure |
| Age 18+ | Hold the adult permit at least 30 days | Same 30 / 90 / 180-day failure schedule |
Use the permit period to build driving experience. The mandatory 50 supervised hours and notarized affidavit apply to applicants under 18; adults do not have that requirement.
The first-test waiting period and a post-failure retest wait are separate clocks. Failing a road test does not restart the original six-month or 30-day permit-holding period.
Yes. For an under-18 Limited Instruction Permit, the six-month holding requirement runs from the permit's issue date. You must also complete the other teen eligibility requirements before testing.
Use Rhode Island's stated six-month requirement rather than converting it into a fixed 180-day rule. Calendar months do not always contain the same number of days.
After passing, applicants under 18 move to a Limited Provisional License, while applicants age 18+ complete first operator's-license issuance. For the full post-test progression, see the Next Steps After Permit guide.
Schedule the road test for a date on or after your eligibility date. The current standard operator road-test site is 600 New London Ave., Cranston.
Check your permit issue date first: under 18, use the six-month requirement; age 18+, use the 30-day requirement. Then use the Rhode Island DMV road-test scheduling process for an eligible date.
Availability changes. Check the official DMV scheduler rather than relying on older advice about choosing Providence, Warwick, Woonsocket, or another branch for an operator road test.
Road-test failures use a separate retest schedule:
These waits do not restart the original permit-holding period.
No. A failed road test creates a separate retest wait. It does not restart the original six-month teen permit hold or the 30-day adult permit hold.
After the third failure, and after each later failure, Rhode Island requires a wait of at least 180 days before another road test.
Do not book before the age-based first-test eligibility date or before a required retest wait has ended. Use the current DMV scheduler and road-test guidance for your next available eligible date.
A teen who has completed the practice hours but has not yet held the permit for six months is still too early for the first road test. An adult who has held the permit fewer than 30 days is also too early.
For teens, do not reduce “six months” to an assumed fixed 180-day shortcut. Use the permit issue date and the DMV's six-month wording.
Adult permit holders are not required to keep a 21+ supervisor in the front passenger seat during the adult permit period.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
