Rhode Island Permit Next Steps: Teen and Adult Paths to the Road Test

What happens next depends on your age. If you are under 18, complete 50 supervised hours including 10 at night, hold the Limited Instruction Permit for at least six months, meet the clean-record rule, then take the road test at Cranston. Passing leads to a Limited Provisional License. If you are 18 or older, hold the adult permit for at least 30 days before the road test; Rhode Island allows adult permit holders to drive alone during that permit period. See shoro.ai Rhode Island Learner Permits.

What are the required steps after getting your Rhode Island learner's permit?

For an under-18 applicant, the six-month rule also requires no moving violation or seat-belt infraction during the preceding six months. A violation does not automatically restart the original permit-holding period; it can delay eligibility until the preceding six months are clear.

Teen vs. Adult Road-Test Eligibility After the Permit

Under 18: The Limited Instruction Permit expires on the holder's 18th birthday. A qualified supervising driver is required while driving, and the detailed supervision and passenger rules are covered in the dedicated driving-rules pages.

Age 18+: The instructional permit is valid for one year. Adults may drive alone during the permit period and can become road-test eligible after 30 days.

Keep the physical permit with you when driving and follow Rhode Island's seat-belt and device-use laws.

Under-18 Practice Hours and the 50-Hour Affidavit

The 50-hour requirement applies to applicants under 18. It includes at least 10 hours at night and is documented with the signed and notarized Rhode Island driving-experience affidavit. Adults 18+ do not have this mandatory 50-hour affidavit.

Next Steps After You Become Eligible for the Road Test

Once you meet the age-based waiting period, schedule the operator road test at the current Cranston test site. The road-test fee is $28.50.

If you are under 18 and pass, the next credential is the Limited Provisional License, currently $29.50. It expires on your 18th birthday. If you are 18 or older and pass, you move to the first operator's-license process.

Detailed vehicle-condition and document rules belong to the separate road-test vehicle and road-test documents guides.

What license do you get after passing the Rhode Island road test if you are under 18?

If you are under 18 and meet the permit-stage requirements, passing the road test leads to a Limited Provisional License, not an immediate full operator's license.

What license do you get after passing the road test at age 18 or older?

If you are 18 or older, passing the road test moves you into the first operator's-license issuance process rather than the teen provisional stage.

When can a Rhode Island teen move from a provisional license to a full license?

A teen can qualify before age 18 after holding the Limited Provisional License for at least 12 months and meeting Rhode Island's clean-record requirement, including no motor-vehicle conviction during the preceding six months.

Do you need to take another knowledge test after passing the road test?

Normally, no. The standard permit-to-license progression does not require another knowledge test simply because you passed the road test. Separate rules can apply if a permit has expired or another licensing issue requires retesting.

Common Problems Before the Rhode Island Road Test

• Confirm your permit is valid and you have reached the correct eligibility date.
• Under 18, bring the signed and notarized 50-hour affidavit.
• Use a vehicle that meets the current DMV road-test requirements and review the dedicated document checklist before leaving home.

Common Permit-to-Road-Test Mistakes

Do not use old Rhode Island road-test location advice. The standard operator road test is currently listed at 600 New London Ave., Cranston, and the skills test is conducted on a closed course.

Also do not treat a moving violation as an automatic restart of the original six-month permit period. For under-18 applicants, the rule is a six-month permit hold plus no moving violation or seat-belt infraction during the preceding six months.
