Rhode Island Learner's Permit Fee: $13.50 Under 18, $8.50 Over 18, Surcharge Explained

A learner's permit in Rhode Island costs $13.50 for applicants under 18 and $8.50 for applicants age 18 or older. The published permit fees already include the $3.50 technology surcharge; credit-card service fees are separate.

What Does a Rhode Island Learner's Permit Cost?

Is the Rhode Island learner's permit fee different for teens and adults?

Yes. The current fee is $13.50 for a Limited Instruction Permit for applicants under 18 and $8.50 for an Instructional Permit for applicants age 18 or older.

Does the $13.50 or $8.50 Rhode Island permit fee already include the technology surcharge?

Yes. Both published permit amounts already include the $3.50 technology surcharge. A separate credit-card service fee can still apply if you pay by card.

Do you pay extra for the Rhode Island DMV vision test?

The current permit fee schedule does not list a separate DMV charge for the standard vision screening completed as part of the permit process.

Is there an extra fee to replace a lost Rhode Island permit?

Yes. The current duplicate-permit fee is $13.50. For the replacement process, use the dedicated Lost / Stolen Permit guide.

Does Rhode Island DMV offer payment plans for permit fees?

No installment plan is listed for the learner's permit fee. The permit fee is paid as part of the DMV transaction using an accepted payment method.

Rhode Island's current permit fee page does not support the older $6.50 knowledge-test retake figure. If you need another knowledge-test attempt, check the current DMV fee guidance when you reschedule.

Permit Cost After Additional Knowledge-Test Attempts

Your starting cost is the published permit fee: $13.50 if you are under 18 or $8.50 if you are 18 or older. Rhode Island requires at least an 8-day wait after a failed knowledge exam.

Do not budget around the older $6.50 retake figure or a driver-education permit discount. The current DMV fee schedule does not list either one. For the full retake process, see the Failed Knowledge Test guide.

Additional Costs Beyond the Rhode Island Permit Fee

Keep official DMV charges separate from optional or conditional costs.

• Credit-card service fee: $1.55 minimum, or 2.40% for transactions of $65 or more.
• Notarization: Only needed in situations where a required signature must be notarized.
• Duplicate permit: $13.50 if you need a replacement credential.

Passport photos are not a separate permit cost; the DMV takes the permit photo as part of the transaction.

Permit Fee Payment and Payment-Plan Availability

Rhode Island DMV fees are paid upfront; the learner's permit fee is not offered on an installment plan. The DMV accepts multiple payment methods, and card payments can add the service fee shown above. For the current accepted methods, check restrictions, online-payment limits, and card-payment rules, see the dedicated Payment Methods guide.

Avoiding Unnecessary Permit Costs

• ? Use the current required-document checklist so a missing document does not force another trip.
• ? Check the current DMV fee schedule before paying rather than relying on old retake-fee or discount figures.
• ? Study the official Rhode Island Driver's Manual before the knowledge exam to reduce the chance of another attempt.
