Rhode Island road-test directions are given in English. An applicant with limited English proficiency may bring an interpreter, at the applicant's own expense and choosing, to translate the examiner's directions during the test. The interpreter must be at least 18. Written knowledge-test language options follow a separate process.
The road test itself is not offered as a separate Spanish- or Portuguese-language test. The examiner gives directions in English, and an eligible limited-English-proficiency applicant may use a qualified interpreter to translate those directions.
| Test / accommodation | Current route |
|---|---|
| Road test | English examiner directions; LEP applicant may bring an interpreter age 18+ at their own expense |
| Computerized knowledge test | English, Spanish, and Portuguese at Cranston Headquarters |
| Other written-test languages | Advance-request foreign-language printed exam |
| Disability-related communication accommodation | Handled separately by DMV on a case-by-case basis |
Yes. A limited-English-proficiency applicant may bring an interpreter at the applicant's own expense and choosing, subject to Rhode Island's interpreter rules.
The interpreter must be at least 18 years old.
Yes. The interpreter may translate the examiner's directions, but may not coach the applicant or take over any part of driving the vehicle.
Yes. The examiner gives directions in English, and the interpreter translates them for the applicant.
Keep the two processes separate. Computerized knowledge testing is handled at Cranston Headquarters, with English, Spanish, and Portuguese computerized options. Other requested written-test languages use the DMV's advance foreign-language exam process.
For a foreign-language knowledge exam, follow the DMV's advance-request process through Cranston. For a road-test interpreter, follow the current DMV scheduling instructions and the article's existing advance-request timing guidance.
An interpreter translates directions; the applicant remains responsible for operating the vehicle and completing the required maneuvers.
For current road-test communication or interpreter questions, contact DMV Road Tests at (401) 462-5750.
The current road-test fee is $28.50. Keep the detailed vehicle and document checklist on the dedicated Road Test Documents and Vehicle Requirements pages.
Do not treat Spanish or Portuguese as separate road-test versions. They are computerized knowledge-test language options. For the road test, English directions may be translated by a qualifying interpreter.
Do not use Woonsocket or another branch as a computerized knowledge-test location; the current DMV route is Cranston Headquarters.
Disability-related communication accommodations are handled separately from limited-English-proficiency interpreters. Contact Rhode Island DMV in advance so the needed accommodation can be reviewed and arranged for the road test.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
