Pennsylvania Learner's Permit Next Steps: From Permit to Road Test

After you receive a Pennsylvania learner's permit, the next steps depend on your age. Drivers under 18 have additional holding-period and supervised-practice requirements before the road test; adults can move toward testing without those age-based requirements.

Next Steps After Getting a Pennsylvania Learner's Permit

The permit-to-license path is different for drivers under 18 and adults. Keep the age-based milestones separate so you know what must be finished before the road test.

For the detailed 65-hour rules, use the dedicated practice-hours guide. For supervisor eligibility and driving restrictions, use the dedicated permit-driving-rules pages.

For drivers under 18, Form DL-180C is the parent/guardian certification that the required supervised practice was completed. It is not a detailed hourly driving log. Notarization is required only when the parent or guardian is not accompanying the applicant to the skills test.

What should you do first after getting a Pennsylvania learner's permit?

Start supervised practice and learn the rules that apply to your age. If you are under 18, track your required practice hours as you work toward road-test eligibility.

How do the next steps differ if you are under 18 or 18+?

Drivers under 18 must complete the six-month holding period and 65 supervised hours before taking the road test. Drivers 18 or older can move toward the road test without those two age-based requirements, but they still must drive only under valid learner-permit supervision until licensed.

Structuring Pennsylvania Practice Hours to Build Real Road Skills

Drivers under 18 must complete 65 supervised hours, including 10 hours at night and 5 hours in poor weather. Keep your own practice record so you can track progress, then use Form DL-180C to certify completion when required.

For the detailed hour breakdown, qualifying supervisors, and practice-record guidance, use the Pennsylvania Required Practice Hours page.

When should you start checking your road-test vehicle and paperwork?

Check the vehicle and required documents before you book or well before the test date, not on the morning of the test. Use the dedicated Road Test Documents and Vehicle Requirements pages for the exact checklist.

Pennsylvania Road Test Scheduling Timeline

When you are ready, schedule the road test through PennDOT's Driver's Test Scheduling Service or an eligible testing provider. Drivers under 18 may book ahead, but the test date must fall after they become eligible; use the dedicated Waiting Period - Road Test guide for timing details.

Before test day, use the dedicated Road Test Documents and Vehicle Requirements pages for the exact paperwork and vehicle checks. If you are under 18, bring the required DL-180C certification; notarization is only needed when the parent or guardian is not accompanying you.

What happens after you pass the Pennsylvania road test?

If you are under 18, passing normally moves you to a Junior Driver's License. If you are 18 or older, passing the road test moves you to the regular Class C driver's-license stage.
