Pennsylvania Permit Test Retakes: Next-Business-Day Wait and Retake Rules

If you fail the Pennsylvania learner's permit knowledge test, you can try again the following business day. PennDOT does not publish a three-attempt cap for the standard non-commercial knowledge test. The three-attempt rule applies to the road test, not the knowledge test.

Immediately After Failing the Pennsylvania PennDOT Permit Test

The test ends when you reach enough incorrect answers that you can no longer earn the required 15 correct answers out of 18. PennDOT returns your application forms so you can bring them back for another attempt. You cannot retake the knowledge test the same day.

• Review the topics you missed before leaving if the testing system provides that feedback.
• Keep your original DL-180 and, if applicable, DL-180TD safe for the next attempt.
• Report a technical problem to PennDOT staff before leaving the center.

What Forms Do You Need to Bring Back for a Pennsylvania Permit-Test Retake?

Bring back the original DL-180 and any applicable DL-180TD that PennDOT returned after the failed test. If a required form is lost, expired, or no longer valid, resolve that document issue before returning.

How Long Must You Wait Between Pennsylvania PennDOT Permit Test Attempts?

You may retake the standard non-commercial knowledge test the following business day. PennDOT allows only one knowledge-test attempt per day, so going to another Driver License Center does not create a second same-day attempt.

Can You Retake the Pennsylvania Permit Test at a Different PennDOT Center?

You can use another Driver License Center that offers knowledge testing, but changing locations does not bypass the one-test-per-day rule.

Do You Need an Appointment to Retake the Pennsylvania Knowledge Test?

The standard knowledge test does not require an appointment. If you need an accommodation or special testing arrangement, follow PennDOT's instructions for that service.

What Happens If You Fail Pennsylvania's School-Based Remote Knowledge Test?

Students participating in Pennsylvania's limited school-based remote testing pilot may retake an unsuccessful knowledge test at school on another day under the pilot's procedures.

PennDOT's published non-commercial knowledge-test guidance does not specify a maximum failure count. Continue to follow the one-attempt-per-day rule and return on a following business day when you are ready.

Is There a Maximum Number of Failed Attempts?

Three failed knowledge-test attempts do not automatically require DL-31 or a new physical. Those three-attempt rules apply to the road test, not the standard non-commercial knowledge test.

What Happens if I Fail the Pennsylvania Permit Test 3 Times?

You can return for another knowledge-test attempt on a later business day as long as your application and required documents remain valid.

What Happens if I Fail the Pennsylvania Permit Test 2 Times?

PennDOT does not publish a separate maximum number of knowledge-test failures. A failed attempt does not by itself trigger the three-attempt rule used for the road test.

How Many Times Can I Fail the Pennsylvania Permit Test?

PennDOT does not state a fixed lifetime or three-attempt maximum for the standard non-commercial knowledge test. The published restriction is one knowledge-test attempt per day.

How Many Times Can I Take the Pennsylvania Permit Test?

PennDOT does not publish a maximum number of failed attempts for the standard non-commercial knowledge test. You may take the knowledge test only once on any day, and after a failed attempt you may return the following business day. Your application and other eligibility requirements still need to remain valid.

Pennsylvania Permit Test Attempt Limits and Repeated Failures

Do You Pay Another Fee to Retake the Pennsylvania Permit Test?

PennDOT does not charge a separate fee simply because you failed the standard knowledge test and return for another attempt while your application remains valid. This is different from permit-extension or replacement transactions, which have their own fees.

For current permit fees and payment methods, use the dedicated Pennsylvania permit cost and payment pages.

Study Strategy After Failing the Pennsylvania PennDOT Permit Test

Use the time before your next attempt to focus on the topics you missed rather than restarting from the beginning.

Before your next attempt, practice with Shoro AI for Pennsylvania to strengthen weak areas and improve your chances of passing on the first try.

• Review the relevant sections of the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual.
• Use Pennsylvania-specific practice questions to check the weak areas you identified.
• If the same topics keep causing problems, change how you study instead of repeating the same practice routine.

Appealing a Failed Pennsylvania PennDOT Knowledge Test

A normal failed knowledge-test score is not changed through an appeal. If the testing equipment fails or another technical problem affects the attempt, report it to PennDOT staff before leaving the center.

Do not confuse knowledge-test retakes with the road-test three-attempt rule. After three failed road-test attempts, an applicant may need to extend the learner's permit with DL-31. The current Class A, B or C permit add/extend/replace fee is $6.00.

Common Pennsylvania Permit Test Retake Scenarios

Failed on road-sign questions: Review the signs and signals section of the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual, then return the following business day when ready.

Forgot a returned form: A retake can be delayed if you do not bring back the required application forms PennDOT returned to you.

Arrived too close to closing: Knowledge-test availability can end before you have enough time to complete the process. Check the specific Driver License Center's hours before leaving.

Failed the road test three times: This is a separate rule from knowledge-test retakes. Use the road-test and permit-validity guidance for DL-31 extension requirements.
