| Format | What changes |
|---|---|
| Online | Requires a desktop or laptop, keyboard, mouse and webcam. Testers under 18 need an eligible proctor. |
| DMV office | Taken on DMV testing equipment. In-office testing stops one hour before that office closes. |
For location, device and proctor details, see Oregon test location and format. For retakes, use the dedicated failed and retakes guide.
The core Class C knowledge test is the same: 35 multiple-choice questions and 28 correct answers to pass. The main age-related difference is online supervision: a tester under 18 needs an eligible proctor age 21 or older.
Before testing, confirm the testing format, office hours and required equipment. If you test online, check the webcam and device requirements first. If you test at DMV, arrive early enough to finish before the office's knowledge-test cutoff.
Original permit issuance still requires the DMV application and document process. See Oregon permit application requirements rather than using this test-format page as a document checklist.
The Class C knowledge test costs $7 per attempt. A standard Class C instruction permit costs $30 when issued.
If you fail an in-office knowledge test, another attempt may be available the same day depending on testing resources. Online testing has separate attempt limits. See Oregon failed test and retake rules for the full retake policy.
