Shoro.aiNo, Oregon does not require driver's education to get your instruction permit. You can walk into any DMV at 15, pass the knowledge and vision tests, and leave with your permit. Zero classroom hours needed.
Oregon does not require driver's education to get an instruction permit. However, completing an ODOT-approved course reduces the required supervised practice hours from 100 to 50. The permit itself requires no driver's education. But for your provisional license, Oregon splits teens into two paths based on whether you complete an ODOT-approved course.
| Path | Driver's Ed Course | Supervised Driving Hours | Drive Test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Path A | Not Taken | 100 Hours Required | Must take at DMV |
| Path B | ODOT-Approved Course Completed | 50 Hours Required | Waived (taken with course provider) |
Path B cuts your practice hours in half and lets you skip the DMV drive test entirely. The catch? You must finish the approved course before turning 18.
Adults 18 and older cannot use the course waiver. They must take the DMV drive test regardless, and no practice log is required.
Only ODOT-approved courses qualify for the 50-hour reduction and test waiver. "Approved" doesn't mean any paid course, it means schools explicitly listed on the ODOT Approved Provider List for Oregon driver education.
Oregon has no parent-taught driver ed waiver, even for homeschoolers. If you want Path B benefits, you're taking an approved course.

Apply for an Oregon instruction permit in person at a full-service DMV field office. Bring identity documents, residency proof, school enrollment if under 18, and the $37 fee. Getting your permit takes four steps. The process is simple if you bring the right documents and arrive early.
Arrive at busy offices like Gresham or Beaverton by 7:45 AM on weekdays. Showing up at 10 AM means a three-hour wait just to take a 20-minute test.
If you fail the knowledge test, ask immediately about a same-day retake. Waiting to ask can mean rescheduling for weeks later, especially at the Beaverton office.
Your supervising driver must hold a valid license for at least three years for the hours to count toward your 50 or 100-hour requirement. Verify the rules on Oregon's teen permit page before starting your log.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
