Oklahoma Learner's Permit Driving Restrictions: 5 AM–10 PM, Supervision, Highways, and Passenger Rules (2026)

An Oklahoma learner's permit does not allow solo driving. A licensed driver age 21 or older must sit beside you in the front passenger seat, and learner-permit driving is limited to 5:00 AM–10:00 PM.

Can I Drive Alone with a Learner's Permit in Oklahoma?

No. You cannot drive alone with a learner's permit in Oklahoma - zero exceptions. A licensed driver age 21 or older must sit in the front passenger seat every time you drive.

Driving alone violates the restriction on the learner permit. Oklahoma treats operating contrary to a license restriction as a misdemeanor, and the violation can add points to the driving record. Service Oklahoma may also suspend or revoke a restricted license based on a violation. For the detailed penalty rules, see the driving-alone penalty guide.

A traffic conviction can also affect when a teen qualifies for the next license stage because the Intermediate License requires no traffic convictions during the 180 days immediately before the drive test.

Where and When Can I Drive With an Oklahoma Learner's Permit?

An Oklahoma learner's permit allows you to practice driving on most roads with a qualified supervisor present. You must drive only between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM. Carrying passengers is permitted when a supervisor is present.

Check the Oklahoma learner's permit guide for current rules and fees.

Interstate Driving With an Oklahoma Learner Permit

Service Oklahoma does not publish a general interstate or highway ban for a standard Class D learner permit. The normal learner-permit rules still apply: a licensed driver age 21 or older must sit beside you, and you may drive only between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM. Do not confuse this with separate rules for special farm permits.

Passengers While Driving With an Oklahoma Learner Permit

Service Oklahoma's learner-permit rules do not list the Intermediate License's separate passenger limit for the learner stage. You still need the required licensed driver age 21 or older beside you, and the learner-permit driving-hour restriction still applies.

Required Supervising Driver While You Drive

• ? Ordinary legal supervision: A licensed driver age 21 or older must sit beside you in the front passenger seat.
• ? Hours counted toward the 50-hour requirement: The supervising driver must be age 21 or older and have been licensed for at least 2 years.
• ? Parent-Taught Driver Education: A parent or legal guardian acting as the PTDE instructor must meet the program's additional eligibility rules. Those extra PTDE rules do not apply to every adult who legally accompanies a learner.
• ? Alertness: The supervising adult should remain sober, awake, and attentive while you drive.

For Parent-Taught Driver Education, the parent or legal guardian must meet the current Service Oklahoma eligibility criteria, including the program's license-status, suspension/revocation, citation/point, and alcohol/drug conditions. The current criteria use a 12-month period for the listed suspension/revocation and alcohol/drug conditions, not a 5-year alcohol/drug rule.

Service Oklahoma does not accept a driving log as proof of the 50 required hours. The Affidavit of Driver Training certifies that the required 50 hours, including 10 at night, were completed. A Parent-Taught course provider may separately require its own course records. Use the Parent-Taught Driver Education Packet for PTDE-specific rules.

The permit holder remains responsible for obeying traffic laws. The supervising adult should stay focused, but Oklahoma's distracted-driving citation applies to the person operating the vehicle; a passenger-supervisor is not ticketed simply for holding a phone.

Oklahoma Learner Permit Driving Hours: 5 AM to 10 PM

• ? Permitted Hours: 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. only.
• ? No School/Work Exception: The school, church, and work exceptions belong to the Intermediate License rules, not the standard learner permit.
• ? Required Night Hours: Ten of the required 50 practice hours must be completed at night. Those 10 hours are included in the 50 total.

Can I Drive to School or Work After 10 PM With an Oklahoma Learner's Permit?

No. The standard learner permit is limited to 5:00 AM–10:00 PM. The school, church, and work exception is an Intermediate License rule, not a learner-permit exception.

Does the 10 PM limit still apply if my parent is in the car? Yes. Having a licensed adult age 21 or older beside you satisfies the supervision rule, but it does not extend the learner-permit driving window past 10:00 PM.

How Can I Complete 10 Night-Driving Hours If I Cannot Drive After 10 PM?

Complete the night practice during hours that are dark but still within the learner-permit window. The 10 night hours count toward the 50-hour total; they are not 10 additional hours.

If you are under 18, complete the free Work Zone Safe course before receiving an Intermediate License and bring the required proof for that licensing step.
