As the driver, you must present your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). You are responsible for any moving violations you commit, like speeding or improper lane changes, which add points to your driving record.

Provide your TIPIC, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance when asked.
Moving-violation consequences depend on the actual offense. Detailed point and suspension rules are covered in the traffic-violations page.
You must have a valid, sober, licensed supervisor beside you at all times. If they become ineligible during the stop, you are effectively driving without supervision.

Ohio Supervisor Rules at Traffic Stops: What Police Actually Check

The officer may check whether the accompanying person is legally qualified to supervise and whether that person is impaired, including asking to see the supervisor's license. The rule is age-specific: drivers under 16 must be accompanied by an eligible adult under Ohio TIPIC rules, while drivers age 16 or older may generally be supervised by a qualified licensed driver age 21 or older, subject to the additional rules that apply to minors.

License Check: The officer verifies the supervisor's license is valid and not suspended.
Impairment Check: If the officer suspects alcohol or drug use, they can investigate for Operating a Vehicle under the Influence (OVI).
Supervisor's Duty: They must be alert and capable of taking control of the vehicle. Supervising while intoxicated violates Ohio Revised Code 4507.05.

Scenario: Learner Is Speeding During a Supervised Drive

If the learner is operating the vehicle and is speeding, the speeding citation is issued to the learner-driver, not automatically to the supervising adult. A supervisor may face a separate citation only for the supervisor's own conduct.

The speeding citation and any points from that violation belong to the person who was driving.
The supervisor can still be investigated or cited for separate unlawful conduct.
The learner's TIPIC can be affected if the learner is convicted of a qualifying traffic offense.

Check Before You Leave: If an officer signals you to pull over, immediately reduce speed and signal your intention. Hesitating or continuing at speed can be seen as evasion, prompting a more intensive stop and potential additional citations.

Ohio Permit Violations When Your Supervisor Is Drunk or Unlicensed

The primary violation for a permit holder is 'driving without a valid supervisor,' which occurs if the supervising driver is found to be intoxicated or driving on a suspended license.

Supervisor's Violation	Potential Charge for Permit Holder	Consequences
OVI / DUI	Driving without a valid supervisor	Misdemeanor citation, fines, court costs, possible delay in licensing.
Driving under suspension	Driving without a valid supervisor	Citation, vehicle may be towed, requires court appearance.
