Ohio Learner's Permit Next Steps: From TIPIC to Driver License

Key Post-Permit Rules

What Are the Next Steps After Getting Your Ohio Learner's Permit?

After you receive your Ohio Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC), the next steps depend on your age and status. Drivers under 18 have a six-month holding period. Ages 18-20 do not have that standard six-month hold, but they still have driver-education and supervised-practice requirements. Some temporary residents age 21+ follow a separate pathway.

Your Next Steps After Getting a Learner's Permit

Start with the requirements that apply to your age group.

• Training: Complete driver education when your pathway requires it. See the dedicated driver-education guide for the full course rules.
• Practice: Complete and document supervised driving when required. See the practice-hours guide for BMV 5791 details.
• Supervision: Follow Ohio TIPIC supervision rules every time you practice.

What Should You Do During the First Week After Getting an Ohio TIPIC?

Start the requirements that apply to your age and status. Begin driver education if required, start supervised practice, keep your practice record current when it applies, and carry your valid TIPIC whenever you drive.

What Changes for an 18–20-Year-Old Ohio Permit Holder?

Ages 18–20 do not have the standard six-month TIPIC hold, but they still must complete the required driver education and 50 supervised driving hours before the road test.

Practice Requirements and Hour Logging

If your pathway requires 50 supervised hours, including 10 at night, keep your record current and complete BMV 5791 as required. The detailed logging, signer, and notarization rules belong in the practice-hours guide.

Driving Practice Rules Before the Ohio Road Test

Follow the restrictions that apply to your TIPIC while you practice. Do not confuse those permit rules with the separate curfew and passenger rules that can apply after a minor receives a probationary license.

See the Ohio driving-rules guide for the current supervision, night-driving, passenger, and phone rules.

Preparing for and Scheduling Your Driving Test

Once you satisfy the requirements for your age and status, schedule the driving and maneuverability test through Ohio BMV.

• Eligibility: Under-18 applicants must complete the six-month TIPIC hold. Ages 18-20 do not have that standard six-month hold but must complete their required training and supervised practice. Some temporary residents age 21+ have a separate 14-day rule.
• Documents: Bring the TIPIC and the age/status-specific documents required for your test. See the road-test documents guide for the full checklist.
• Vehicle: Use a vehicle that meets Ohio road-test inspection requirements. See the vehicle-requirements guide for the inspection list.

Passing the road test does not automatically convert the TIPIC into a license. After you pass, complete the license-purchase step at a deputy registrar within the required period. Applicants under 18 receive a probationary license; applicants 18+ receive a driver license.

What Happens After You Pass the Ohio Road Test but Before You Receive Your License?

Passing the driving and maneuverability tests does not issue the license by itself. Complete the separate license-purchase step at a deputy registrar within the required 60-day period.

Does passing the road test automatically turn your TIPIC into a license? No. The TIPIC remains a permit until the driver-license issuance step is completed.

What if your TIPIC will expire before you finish the next steps? Do not rely on an expired TIPIC for driving or testing. Review the Ohio permit-validity and reapplication rules before the expiration date.
