BMV 5791 Key Rules

How Many Supervised Practice Hours Does Ohio Require With a Learner's Permit?

Drivers under 21 must complete 50 total hours of supervised practice driving, including at least 10 hours at night. Adults 21 and older have no mandatory practice hours.

Total Hours Required by Age

The practice-hour requirement depends on the driver's age and credential type.

Day vs. Night Hour Breakdown

For drivers under 21, the 50-hour total has specific components.

• 10 Nighttime Hours (Mandatory): Defined as one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise.
• 40+ Additional Hours: Can be completed during daytime or other conditions.
• 8 Professional Training Hours: State-approved in-car instruction counts toward the 50-hour total.

What Counts Toward Your Required Practice Time?

Ohio BMV accepts these activities for the BMV 5791 driving log.

• Professional driver's ed behind-the-wheel hours.
• Everyday driving trips to school, work, or stores.
• Test preparation, like practicing the maneuverability course.
• Highway driving on Ohio interstates.
• Time supervised by different licensed adults over 21.

What does NOT count:

• 24 hours of classroom/online instruction (separate requirement).
• Driving simulator apps.
• Observing from the passenger seat.

Do Ohio learner's permit practice hours have to be completed in Ohio?

Keep a complete record of any supervised driving completed while traveling. If you plan to rely on substantial out-of-state hours, confirm acceptance with the Ohio BMV before the driving test rather than assuming every session will be credited.

Can more than one supervising adult contribute to the 50 Ohio practice hours?

Yes. Practice can be completed with different qualified supervisors. The driving record still needs to accurately show the required total and night hours.

Does Ohio Require You to Officially Log Learner's Permit Driving Hours?

Yes, if you are under 21. You must submit a notarized BMV 5791 Fifty Hour Affidavit at your driving skills test. Applicants 21 and older are exempt from logging hours.

How to Log Your Supervised Driving Hours

You have two official options to track your learners permit driving hours.

Option 1: RoadReady Ohio App (Recommended)

Complete Ohio permit details are on the Ohio permit guide.

• The official app uses GPS to track drives automatically. Also download the BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit for the mandatory paper record.
• It tallies day and night hours and generates a pre-filled BMV 5791 PDF.
• You must still print the PDF and get it notarized.

Option 2: Paper BMV 5791 Form

• Manually log each session with date, duration, and day/night designation.
• No: Illegible or messy forms may be rejected by examiners.

Can you use more than one driving log sheet for the Ohio 50-hour requirement? Yes. You can track sessions across multiple pages or records, but the final total must be complete, accurate, and supported by the required BMV 5791 affidavit.

How Ohio BMV Reviews BMV 5791 and Driving Logs

Examiners check the log before your test. They look for realistic logging patterns.

• Visual Inspection: Logging excessive hours in a single day is a red flag.
• App Verification: GPS data from the RoadReady app adds credibility.
• Skill Mismatch: If your driving skills don't match the logged experience, your file may be flagged for review.

A Cincinnati teen logged 7 hours on a Tuesday. The examiner questioned the unrealistic duration and requested a detailed breakdown, delaying the test.

Common BMV 5791 and Driving Log Questions

A Columbus applicant presented a log where all 10 night hours were recorded on consecutive dates with identical start/end times. The examiner suspected fabrication and required a re-notarized affidavit with more plausible entries, causing a 3-week reschedule.

Signature and Notary Requirements

BMV 5791 must be signed by the eligible adult who attests to the supervised driving record and must be notarized.

• An eligible adult may include a parent, guardian, custodian, or a licensed adult over 21 acting in loco parentis, as allowed by the form.
• Do not sign the affidavit until the required hours are complete and the form is ready for notarization.
• Keep the completed notarized form with the documents you need for the driving test.

Who signs BMV 5791 if several adults supervised the learner? The eligible adult who can attest to the completed supervised-driving record signs the affidavit and has it notarized; every individual supervisor does not need a separate final affidavit.

What happens if BMV 5791 is signed or notarized before all 50 hours are complete?

Do not use an affidavit that certifies incomplete hours as complete. Finish the required driving, then sign and notarize an accurate affidavit.

How Long It Can Take to Complete the Required Practice Hours

Spread the required practice across enough days and conditions to build real experience rather than trying to complete the hours in a few long sessions.

• Ages 18-20: Once the required 50 hours and other licensing requirements are complete, the six-month minor holding period does not apply.
• Under 18: The separate minimum TIPIC holding period still applies before licensing.
