Failed the Ohio Permit Test? 24-Hour Wait, Online Limits and Retake Rules

Failing the Ohio permit test means your TIPIC is not issued until you pass. Ohio requires a waiting period before another attempt, and online testing has a separate attempt limit.

Immediate Consequences and Retake Policy

If you fail, you leave without a TIPIC. Ohio requires at least 24 hours before another knowledge-test attempt. In-person testing does not have a stated attempt limit. Online testing is limited to two attempts within six months.

Are retake rules different for teens and adults? The core failed-knowledge-test rules are the same. Other TIPIC requirements can still vary by age.

Does failing the Ohio permit test mean you have to restart your application? No. An ordinary failed knowledge test does not require you to start the application from scratch.

How Long Do You Wait to Retake the Ohio Permit Test, and Is There a Retake Fee?

The minimum wait is 24 hours after a failed attempt. There is no separate Ohio Class D knowledge-test retake fee. You purchase the TIPIC after passing the required testing. Verify the current TIPIC fee at bmv.ohio.gov/doc-fees.aspx.

Can you switch from the Ohio online permit test to an in-person test after failing? Yes. After the required wait, you can use an in-person testing route instead of another online attempt.

Can you take your Ohio permit-test retake at a different testing location? Yes, as long as the new location offers knowledge testing. The statewide retake rules do not require you to return to the same location.

How Many Times Can I Take or Fail the Ohio Permit Test?

Ohio does not set a maximum number of in-person knowledge-test attempts. So if you are asking, how many times can I take the Ohio permit test? or how many times can I fail the Ohio permit test?, you may keep retaking it in person after the required wait. Online testing is different: you can make only two online attempts in a six-month period.

What Happens If I Fail the Ohio Permit Test 2 or 3 Times?

If you fail the Ohio permit test 2 times online, you have used the two online attempts allowed during that six-month period. After the required wait, your next attempt must be in person. If your first two failures were in person, there is no special two-failure penalty.

If you fail the Ohio permit test 3 times overall, Ohio does not impose a special three-failure penalty or require you to restart the application simply because of the number of failed knowledge-test attempts. A third online attempt is not allowed within the same six-month period, so any further attempt during that period must be in person.

Is There a Maximum Number of Failed Attempts?

There is no stated maximum number of failed in-person attempts. The only published attempt cap is for online testing: two attempts in six months. The regular waiting rule still applies after a failed attempt.

What if an online attempt is stopped for suspicious activity? Ohio BMV says you must wait at least one calendar day and then take the knowledge test in person at a Driver Exam Station.

Appealing a Test Result and Preparing for Your Retake

Can you appeal a failed permit test? You can request a review of your test results if you believe there was a scoring or administrative error.

• Submit a written request with supporting documentation within the applicable review period.
• Not knowing the material is not grounds for a review.

For your next attempt, focus on the topics you missed. Use the official Ohio driver manual as the source of truth and use practice questions to check weak areas.

Preparing for Your Next Ohio Knowledge-Test Attempt

Before testing, practice with Shoro AI for Ohio to prepare better and aim to pass on your first attempt—or, if you are retaking, on your next try.

• Wait the required time. Do not plan another attempt before the 24-hour minimum has passed.
• Check your remaining online attempts. After two online attempts in six months, the next attempt must be in person.
• Review the topics you missed. Spend the wait period on the specific rules or signs that caused errors instead of restarting your study plan from the beginning.
• Check testing hours if you are retaking in person. Knowledge-test availability can vary by location, so confirm the testing service before traveling.
