There is no legal limit to how many times you can obtain a new permit, but each one is a new application valid for only one year.
| Scenario | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Permit expires before road test | Must re-apply, retest, and pay $26.50 again, or $29.50 if the prior license expired beyond 6 months and within 2 years. |
| Second or third permit needed | Same full process each time; no cumulative limit. |
| Failed road test multiple times | Can re-apply for new permit if current one expires during attempts. |
| Term | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Expiration | Your TIPIC is no longer valid for driving once its one-year validity period ends. |
| Renewal | Ohio does not extend the old TIPIC as a normal renewal. |
| Reapplication | You apply for a new TIPIC, complete the required permit testing again, and pay the current permit fee. |
Can you reapply for an Ohio TIPIC before the current permit expires? Ohio's public guidance explains reapplication after expiration but does not describe a standard early-renewal process for a still-valid TIPIC. If timing creates a road-test problem, contact the BMV before the permit expires rather than assuming it can be renewed early.
Ohio does not publish a lifetime cap on operator TIPIC reapplications. Each time a TIPIC expires, you must meet the current temporary-permit requirements again.
Do not drive on an expired TIPIC. Ohio treats the permit as expired once its printed validity ends; the ordinary operator TIPIC is not renewed like a driver license, so an expired permit requires a new temporary-permit process.
No. Your certified 50-hour driving log (BMV 5791 affidavit) remains valid. Bring the completed BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit to your driving test appointment.

Yes. Reapplication requires passing the permit knowledge test again. For attempt limits and retake timing, see the Ohio failed-test and retake guide.
No. Driving with an expired TIPIC is not allowed. You cannot schedule or take a road test with an expired permit, even if it expired one day ago. The permit must be valid on the day of the test.
Complete Ohio permit details are on the Ohio permit guide.
Save Yourself Time: Schedule your road test at least 8 weeks before your permit's expiration date. A Cleveland learner tried to book a test two weeks before expiry, but the earliest appointment at the East 55th Street exam station was 10 weeks out, causing her permit to lapse before the test date.
What if your TIPIC expires after you schedule the road test but before the test date? You must present a valid TIPIC at the driving and skills test. If it will be expired on test day, re-establish a valid permit and reschedule if necessary. See Ohio BMV driving-test requirements.
Ohio says an expired TIPIC means starting the permit process over, but its public guidance does not say that an already completed approved driver-education course or properly documented driving hours automatically become invalid. Keep your certificate and driving record and confirm what must be repeated before reapplying.
If your TIPIC expires at age 18-20, you can retake the knowledge test and vision screening to reapply for a new TIPIC. Driver education and the 50 supervised practice hours are licensing requirements before the road test and driver license; they are not prerequisites to retaking the permit knowledge test.
See the Ohio driving-rules guide for the age-based training and practice requirements.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
