Retaking Failed Test
North Dakota Permit Test Retakes: Wait Times, Fees, and Attempt Limits
Failed your North Dakota permit test? The retry rule depends on how you tested. NDDOT allows one in-person knowledge-test attempt per day. A failed KnowTo Drive online test can be retaken after 24 hours, while an online disqualification has a 7-day wait. Retakes cost $5 in person or $10 online.
What Happens When You Fail North Dakota Permit Test?
A failed test and an online disqualification do not use the same retry rule.
| Situation | When Can You Try Again? | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Failed in-person knowledge test | A later day; NDDOT allows one attempt per day | Standard in-person testing rule |
| Failed KnowTo Drive online test | After 24 hours | Normal online failure |
| Disqualified from KnowTo Drive | After 7 days | Different from simply failing the scored test |
| Five failed online tests | Online testing is blocked for one year | You can use the in-person testing route instead |
Collect your score report before leaving if one is provided so you can review the sections you missed. If you plan to retake in person, use the NDDOT appointment process rather than relying on walk-in availability.
Can You Retake the North Dakota Permit Test the Same Day After Failing?
No. NDDOT allows one in-person knowledge-test attempt per day. If you fail KnowTo Drive online, you must wait 24 hours before another online attempt.
Failing vs. Disqualification on the North Dakota Online Permit Test
A normal failed online test has a 24-hour wait. A disqualification is a separate online-testing outcome and carries a 7-day wait before another online attempt.

North Dakota Permit Test Attempt Limits After Multiple Failures
For in-person testing, NDDOT publishes a limit of one knowledge-test attempt per day but does not state a maximum total number of failed in-person attempts. If you fail two or three times, the same one-attempt-per-day rule continues to apply.
For KnowTo Drive online testing, a normal failure can be retaken after 24 hours. After five failed online tests, you cannot test online again for one year, but you may use the in-person Driver License Site route instead. Online disqualifications follow a separate rule: a 7-day wait, with a one-year online restriction after five disqualifications.
So, there is no published overall maximum number of North Dakota knowledge-test failures across both testing methods; the specific five-attempt limit applies to the online route before its one-year lockout.
How Much Does North Dakota Permit Test Retake Cost

| Online via KnowTo Drive | $10.00 | Retake after 24 hours after a normal failure |
| Online disqualification | New online attempt fee applies | Retake after 7 days |
| After five failed online tests | Online testing blocked for one year | Use the in-person testing route instead |

Can You Appeal Failed North Dakota Permit Test?

- Report system problems to site supervisors immediately
- Bring all required documents for every attempt to avoid rejections
Document problems can still block an in-person retake. Check the dedicated Required Documents guidance before your appointment.
Score 23/25 on multiple practice tests before attempting again - most people fail because they don't master sign categories thoroughly enough.
