Missing required paperwork can stop the North Carolina road-test or licensing transaction. Have every required item ready, but note that some items, including the 60-hour driving log, may be accepted digitally or in print.
For an NCDMV Level 2 road test, bring the required licensing documents for the teen, current vehicle registration, and qualifying proof of liability insurance. The 60-hour driving log may be shown digitally or in print.
| Where You Take the Road Test | Document Difference |
|---|---|
| NCDMV Driver License Office | Bring the standard Level 2 documents, vehicle registration, insurance proof, and driving log |
| NCDMV-certified private driver education school | After passing, bring the school's road-test pass certificate plus the required licensing documents to NCDMV to complete the transaction |
See current Level 2 requirements at NCDMV.
Bring the road-test pass certificate from the certified school plus the licensing documents required for your Level 2 or Class C transaction. Passing at the school does not replace the final NCDMV licensing step.
The driving log must show at least 60 hours, including at least 10 hours at night. Each driving entry identifies the supervising driver's printed name and driver-license number/state; the form also has a separate supervising-driver certification/signature.
Yes. NCDMV currently accepts the required Level 2 driving log in digital or printed form. The log still must show the required hours and supervising-driver information.
Detailed practice-hour and log-completion guidance belongs in the Required Practice Hours page.
If a required document is missing, the road test or licensing transaction may not proceed. Have the required paperwork complete at check-in and rebook if NCDMV cannot complete the transaction that day.
The existing seven-day road-test retake rule applies after a failed road test; document-specific rescheduling depends on the transaction and office availability.
NCDMV accepts several forms of qualifying liability-insurance proof, such as an insurance card, policy, DL-123, binder, or qualifying insurer letter. For the Level 2 transaction, an image displayed on a mobile device is not accepted.
Bring the current registration for the test vehicle. Vehicle-condition checks such as lights, brakes, horn, tires, and other safety items belong in the dedicated Vehicle Requirements page.
Applicants under 18 must also bring a valid Driving Eligibility Certificate from their school dated within 30 days and have a parent or legal guardian present to co-sign the application.
The Driving Eligibility Certificate requirement remains in effect through September 30, 2026. Under Session Law 2026-46, that requirement is removed effective October 1, 2026. Applicants should follow the rule in effect on the date of their licensing transaction.
Get Driving Eligibility Certificate details here: https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/online/other-services/Pages/graduated-license.aspx.
Common document problems include expired or unacceptable insurance proof, an incomplete driving-log certification, and an expired Driving Eligibility Certificate when that certificate is still required for the applicant.
Check document dates and required signatures/certifications before the appointment. Vehicle-condition failures and appointment-confirmation problems are covered in their dedicated pages.
The Level 2 Provisional License fee is $25.50 payable at the time of the road test. Bring cash or card backup. Verify all document dates the evening before your scheduled road test.
Parent/guardian must be present; see https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/level2.aspx. For more on documents for nc road test day, see the resources linked throughout this guide.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
