Arriving with the correct paperwork is mandatory to take your New York road test. Missing a document means you will be turned away.
The DMV does not publish easier routes or official pass-rate rankings by test site.
| Step | What You Need | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Gather documents | 6-point ID (ID-44 guide) | Before DMV visit |
| 2. Complete MV-44 | Application form | Online or at DMV |
| 3. Pass written test | 14 of 20 correct (2 of 4 signs) | DMV office |
| 4. Pass vision test | 20/40 acuity minimum | DMV office |
| 5. Pay fee | Check DMV fee chart for your age | DMV office |
Bring the learner permit and the course proof that applies to your record. If the applicant is under 18, bring a completed MV-262 each time the road test is taken.
| Requirement | Physical document or DMV record? |
|---|---|
| Learner permit | Bring the permit. If it is an interim or temporary permit without a photo, also bring a New York State photo non-driver ID or NYS photo license. |
| In-person Pre-Licensing Course | Bring the applicable physical MV-278 certificate. |
| Approved Online Pre-Licensing Course | Completion is reported electronically to DMV; no MV-278 is issued for the road test. |
| Driver Education / MV-285 | The completion may already be on file with DMV; follow the current DMV record requirement. |
| MV-262 | Required for an applicant under 18 and handed to the examiner each time. |
This page begins at the road-test stage. Permit application forms, six-point identity proofs, the written test and the original vision-test process belong in the Application Process and Required Documents guides.
Bring the interim or temporary permit plus a New York State photo non-driver ID or New York State photo license. DMV's road-test instructions say out-of-state photo documents are not accepted for this purpose.
No. If you completed an approved Online Pre-Licensing Course, the completion is reported electronically to DMV and you do not bring an MV-278 for the road test.
If the Student Certificate of Completion is already on file with DMV, follow the DMV record rather than treating a paper MV-285 as universally required at the road test.
Not always. If another licensed driver drives you to the site, that driver can be over 18 and must have a physical license valid for the test vehicle. If you drive there using your learner permit, your supervising driver must be at least 21.
No. Use the physical license or permit documents required by DMV for the road test. Do not rely on Mobile ID as a substitute for the physical credential at the test site.
The road-test vehicle must have valid registration, insurance and inspection and must meet DMV safety requirements.
The accompanying driver's age depends on who drives to the site:
Detailed vehicle safety and rental-car requirements belong in the Vehicle Requirements — Road Test guide.
Bring the rental agreement and any written authorization required for road-test use. The rental vehicle must also meet the same registration, insurance, inspection and safety requirements that apply to the test vehicle.
Check permit status, course completion, MV-262 if required, vehicle registration, insurance and inspection before test day. Make sure names, dates and signatures are complete where required.
Arrive up to 15 minutes before the scheduled test. If you have a temporary learner permit without a photo, bring the additional New York State photo ID required by DMV.
Keep location-selection and vehicle-safety detail in their dedicated road-test guides.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
