Next Steps After Permit
New York Permit Next Steps: Junior Permit Checklist Before Road Test
New York's junior learner permit requires completing a specific set of tasks during the mandatory holding period before you become eligible to schedule a road test. This checklist covers supervised hours, the pre-licensing course, and driving restrictions.
Mandatory waiting period after getting a New York junior permit
Junior permit holders under 18 must wait at least six months after the permit is issued before scheduling the road test. They must also complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours after sunset.
MV-262 is a certification, not a session-by-session driving log. A parent or guardian signs it to certify that the required supervised practice was completed. Detailed hour tracking belongs in the New York Required Practice Hours guide.
| Requirement | Under 18 | Age 18+ |
|---|---|---|
| Six-month permit hold | Yes | No junior six-month hold |
| 50 supervised hours, including 15 after sunset | Yes | No state 50-hour requirement |
| MV-262 | Required at the road test | Not required |
| Pre-licensing requirement | Complete the required pre-licensing or approved Driver Education path | Complete the required pre-licensing or approved Driver Education path |
| After passing | Junior-license rules may still apply depending on age and Driver Education status | Class D licensing rules apply |
Where to check New York learner permit restrictions and violation penalties
New York learner permit holders must follow the supervision, time, passenger and location rules that apply to their age and region. The detailed NYC, Long Island and Upstate rules belong in the dedicated Driving Restrictions guide.
Do not treat every permit violation as an automatic 60-day suspension. For junior drivers, a 60-day suspension can follow one serious traffic violation or two other violations, while a first qualifying cell-phone or texting conviction has a separate 120-day suspension. See the Traffic Violations on Permit guide for the full penalty rules.
Courses and skills required before the New York road test
Before the road test, complete the applicable pre-licensing requirement and practice the driving skills tested on the road test. The 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course and approved Driver Education are separate paths.
If you completed an in-person Pre-Licensing Course, bring the required MV-278 certificate. If you completed the approved Online Pre-Licensing Course, completion is reported electronically to DMV, so you do not bring an MV-278. An MV-285 may also already be on file with DMV.
Use the Driver's Manual and the dedicated Road Test pages for maneuvers, vehicle preparation and test-day requirements.
Does a 17-year-old automatically get a Class D license after passing the road test with Driver Education completed?
Not from age alone. A 17-year-old who completes a state-approved Driver Education course and has the qualifying MV-285 on file can become eligible for a senior Class D license. Without that Driver Education path, junior-license restrictions continue until the driver becomes eligible for the senior license.
Requirements to complete before scheduling your New York road test
Once you are eligible, schedule the road test through New York DMV's road-test system. Applicants under 18 must first complete the six-month permit hold and bring a completed MV-262.
Bring your learner permit and the course proof that applies to your situation. An in-person MV-278 is normally a physical certificate, while approved online pre-licensing completion is reported electronically. An MV-285 may also be on file.
Keep the document checklist brief here. See the dedicated Road Test Documents and Vehicle Requirements guides for the full test-day list.
What happens immediately after you pass the New York road test?
DMV gives you instructions for checking the result online. After a passing result is posted, an interim license is available online. Keep that interim license with your photo learner permit until the photo driver license arrives.
Can you drive immediately after passing the New York road test?
Do not treat the examiner finishing the test as the moment you can drive independently. Wait for DMV to post the passing result and make the interim license available, then carry the interim license with your photo learner permit and follow any junior-license restrictions that still apply.
Your learner permit after passing the New York road test
Keep the photo learner permit with the interim license until your photo driver license arrives. The interim license provides the new driving authority; the old permit by itself does not become a full license.
How long does the New York driver license take to arrive after passing the road test?
New York DMV says the photo driver license normally arrives by mail in about two weeks after you pass. Use the interim license with your photo learner permit while you wait.
