New Jersey Supervised Driving Hours: Who Must Complete 50 Hours

New Jersey requires 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night, when the permit was issued on or after February 1, 2025 while the driver was under 21. Practice That Counts Toward the 50 Hours

What counts as one of the required 10 hours of night driving?

Night hours are supervised practice completed during darkness. They count toward the same 50-hour total, so a driver who completes 10 hours at night still needs 40 additional supervised hours to reach 50.

Does the 50-hour rule apply if my NJ permit was issued before February 1, 2025?

No. The 50-hour certification rule applies to qualifying under-21 permits issued on or after February 1, 2025. A permit issued before that date is not brought under the new 50-hour rule simply because the holder is still under 21.

What if I turn 21 after getting my permit — do I still need 50 hours?

Yes, if the 50-hour rule applied when your permit was issued. Turning 21 later does not remove the certification requirement for that permit.

Can I finish all 50 driving hours before the six-month waiting period ends?

Yes. The practice-hour total and the minimum permit-holding period are separate requirements. You can finish the 50 hours earlier, but an under-21 driver still must complete the required holding period before moving to the road test.

Do I need to log my driving hours in New Jersey?

If the 50-hour rule applies to your permit, you need enough accurate records to truthfully complete the Certification of Supervised Driving (Form BA-CSD). MVC collects the signed certification rather than a daily personal log.

Tracking Hours and Completing Form BA-CSD

New Jersey uses a two-part system: a personal log for your records and the official BA-CSD form for submission.

• Personal Log: Use a notebook, spreadsheet, or app to track each practice session. Record the date, start/end times, conditions (day/night/weather), skills practiced, and supervisor's name.
• Official Form: You must submit the signed Form BA-CSD when you go to get your license after passing the road test.

Who can sign Form BA-CSD for my supervised driving hours?

The certification may be signed by a parent, guardian, or supervising driver who can truthfully certify that the required supervised practice was completed. The form is presented when you apply for the probationary license.

MVC Verification of the 50-Hour Requirement

• Do they actually check your log book or just trust your signature?
  The MVC does not collect your daily logbook.
• They collect and file the signed BA-CSD form.
• However, the form is a legal affidavit signed under penalty of perjury.
• An agent may question obviously false information, like claiming 50 hours were completed in one week.

• What if you forgot to log hours: can you estimate them retroactively?
  You can reconstruct your log from memory, but estimates must be accurate and truthful.
• Falsifying hours on the BA-CSD form is a crime.
• For example, a student in Cherry Hill had their license processing delayed because their retroactive log showed 8 hours of practice every single day, which the MVC agent found improbable.

• Can you count driver's ed behind-the-wheel hours toward the 50?
  Yes.
• Hours spent driving with a licensed instructor from a state-approved driver education program count toward your total 50 required practice hours.
• You should include these hours in your personal log and on the BA-CSD form.

Photograph your car's odometer at the start and end of each practice session with your phone. This creates timestamped, GPS-located proof of duration and distance that you can reference if you need to reconstruct your log or face an inquiry.

GDL Rules That Still Apply During Supervised Practice

Supervised permit holders must still follow New Jersey's separate GDL driving restrictions. For under-21 permit holders, MVC allows the supervising driver, parents, guardians or dependents, plus one additional passenger unless a parent or guardian is present. Supervised permit holders may not use handheld or hands-free interactive wireless devices while driving.
