New Jersey Permit Test Retakes: 7-Day Wait After a Failed Knowledge Test

If you fail the New Jersey permit knowledge test, NJ MVC says you can retest in 7 days. The standard Class D permit fee is $10; MVC does not list a separate $10 fee for each knowledge-test retake. Your permit process remains active, and you have two years from obtaining the permit to finish the first-license steps before a new permit is required.

After a Failed New Jersey Permit Test

A failed knowledge test does not end your permit application. NJ MVC requires a 7-day wait before another knowledge-test attempt.

• You cannot retest the same day.
• You do not need to buy a new permit just because you failed once.
• Your existing permit timeline continues; MVC gives you two years from obtaining the permit to complete the first-license steps.
• The failure does not change the separate road-test waiting rules that apply after you eventually pass the knowledge and vision tests.

Do I need to buy a new permit after failing the knowledge test?

No. A failed knowledge test by itself does not require a new permit. You need a new permit if the existing permit expires or you do not finish the required first-license steps within MVC's two-year completion period.

Does failing the knowledge test restart my two-year permit deadline?

No. The two-year period runs from when you obtained the permit. A failed knowledge-test attempt does not restart that clock.

Can You Retake the Permit Test the Same Day in New Jersey

No. NJ MVC says that after a failed knowledge test, you can retest in 7 days. A same-day second attempt is not allowed.

Knowledge-Test Retake Waiting Period

The Class D knowledge-test retake wait is 7 days after a failed attempt. The public MVC first-license instructions do not publish a separate shorter wait for the first or second failure.

The 14-day road-test rule is included only for comparison. Road-test retakes are covered in the dedicated road-test pages.

NJ Knowledge Test Retake Wait: 7 Days

MVC states the wait as 7 days, not seven business days. Do not use the old 1-business-day rule for the first two failures.

Is the 7-day NJ permit-test retake wait calendar days or business days?

NJ MVC says you can retest in seven days. It does not describe the requirement as seven business days.

Do I need a new appointment to retake the NJ knowledge test?

Yes. Knowledge testing at MVC Licensing Centers is appointment-only. Schedule the new knowledge-test appointment for a date when your seven-day wait has been completed.

Can I retake the NJ knowledge test at a different MVC Licensing Center?

When scheduling the retest, choose an MVC Licensing Center that offers knowledge testing. MVC's public first-license instructions do not state that the retest must be at the same center where you failed.

Permit Test Attempt Limits and Repeated Failures

NJ MVC does not publish a maximum number of Class D knowledge-test attempts in its current public first-license guidance. After any failed attempt, the published 7-day retest rule applies, and the permit's overall two-year completion deadline remains in effect.

How many times can I take the New Jersey permit test? NJ MVC does not publish a maximum attempt count for the Class D knowledge test.

How many times can I fail the New Jersey permit test? Current public MVC guidance does not state a maximum number of failed attempts.

What happens if I fail the New Jersey permit test 2 times? MVC does not publish a separate penalty for a second Class D knowledge-test failure; the same retest rule applies.

What happens if I fail the New Jersey permit test 3 times? Current MVC guidance does not add a special three-failure penalty or mandatory driver-education course.

Is there a maximum number of failed attempts? No maximum is stated in the current public first-license guidance.

Permit Fee and Retake Costs

NJ MVC lists the standard Student Learner's Permit and GDL Examination Permit fee as $10. MVC does not list a separate $10 Class D knowledge-test fee for every failed retake.

Do not confuse the permit fee with private driver-education costs or other MVC transactions. For broader payment and refund rules, use the dedicated Fees & Costs pages.

Can You Appeal a Failed Permit Test in New Jersey

There is no formal written appeal process for a failed NJ MVC knowledge test. The test is computer-scored and results are immediate and final for that session. If you believe a question was flawed or scored incorrectly, you can:

• Ask the MVC examiner at the agency to review the session results, they can see which questions were marked wrong
• Submit a written concern to NJ MVC customer service at mvc.state.nj.us
• Contact your local MVC agency manager, individual question disputes are rare but occasionally reviewed

Practically speaking, appeals rarely reverse a failed result. Retesting is the standard path forward.

Study Plan Before the Next Permit-Test Attempt

Use the current New Jersey Driver Manual and focus on the rules or question types you found difficult. Detailed topic breakdowns, road-sign study and full practice-test strategy belong on the dedicated Permit Test Prep pages.

Before your next attempt, practice with Shoro AI's New Jersey learner permit prep to prepare better and aim to pass on your first attempt.

• Review the current NJ Driver Manual rather than an older saved edition.
• Revisit weak areas instead of repeating the same memorized question set.
• Use practice questions to check understanding before booking the next attempt.

Do Permit Test Failures Show on Your Driving Record in New Jersey

No. Knowledge test failures do not appear on your New Jersey driving record and are not visible to insurers, employers, or courts. Only road test results and traffic violations are recorded.

• Failed permit test attempts are not recorded on your New Jersey driving abstract or permanent MVC record.
• They are internal MVC administrative tracking only.
• Employers, insurance companies, and courts cannot see permit test failure history.
• Once you pass and receive your permit, only licensed-driver activity (violations, accidents, suspensions) becomes part of your driving record.

How to Avoid Another Failed Permit Test

• Use the full seven-day wait: do not rely on the old one-business-day retest advice.
• Book a knowledge-test appointment: MVC knowledge testing is appointment-only at Licensing Centers.
• Study from the current Driver Manual: focus on the rules you still find difficult rather than only repeating familiar quizzes.
• Watch the permit deadline: repeated failures do not restart the two-year period for completing the first-license steps.

Example: Reviewing a Missed Road-Sign Question Before Retesting

One Trenton applicant had a strong overall score but missed a New Jersey road-sign question. They reviewed the sign-identification material in the Driver Manual during the seven-day wait and used that weak area as the focus for the next attempt.
