New Hampshire Road Test Vehicle Requirements: Safety Check, Registration, Insurance and Mirrors

• ? Your vehicle must pass a pre-test inspection by the examiner before the New Hampshire road test begins.
• ? The car needs working brake lights, turn signals, horn, mirrors, and valid registration and insurance.
• A cracked windshield, faulty equipment, or missing documentation fails the inspection and forfeits the appointment with no refund of waiting time.

What vehicle requirements must your car meet for the New Hampshire road test?

You must provide a safe, street-legal vehicle that is currently registered and meets New Hampshire DMV safety standards. The vehicle will undergo a pre-test inspection.

Official minimum: You provide the test vehicle, it must match the class of license being tested, and an out-of-state vehicle must be in safe operating condition. The checklist below also covers practical pre-test preparation already described in this article.

Do you have to provide your own vehicle for the New Hampshire road test?

Yes. The applicant provides the vehicle used for the road-skills examination. The vehicle must be suitable for the class of license being tested.

Does the test vehicle have to match the license class you are applying for? Yes.

Vehicle pre-check before the road test

Your car must pass a detailed safety check before the road test can begin. Failure on any point results in cancellation.

• ? Registration: Present a valid, original registration certificate. The vehicle must display current, legible New Hampshire license plates.
• ? Insurance/Financial Responsibility: Provide proof of valid insurance or financial responsibility for the vehicle.
• ? Mechanical Functionality: All primary safety equipment must work: headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, and windshield wipers.
• ? Tires and Brakes: Tires must have even wear and no visible damage obstructing safe operation. Brakes must have firm pressure.
• Dashboard Warnings: No critical warning lights (e.g., Check Engine, ABS, Airbag) can be illuminated.
• ? Interior & Cleanliness: The car must be clean, with a functional front passenger door and seatbelts for both occupants. The windshield must be clear of major cracks.
• Fuel Level: Arrive with at least half a tank of gas.

Can you use a vehicle registered in another state for the NH road test?

Yes, an out-of-state vehicle can be used when it is appropriate for the license class and is in safe operating condition. Bring the vehicle documents required for the appointment.

What vehicle features or conditions can prevent the NH road test?

Not all vehicles are allowed for the test.

• ? Vehicles with significant structural damage, missing mirrors, or illegal window tint (exceeding 35%) are rejected.
• ? Driver-assist features like Auto-Park or full self-driving modes cannot be used during the test maneuvers.
• ? Rental cars are typically prohibited unless your name is on the agreement and the company explicitly allows driver testing.

Can you use a parent's car for the New Hampshire driving test?

Yes, using a parent's car is permitted and often recommended due to driver familiarity. However, strict rules apply.

Vehicle documents to have ready on test day

If you are still driving under the supervised-practice exception, you cannot drive to the test alone. Use a licensed certified instructor, licensed parent/legal guardian, or licensed responsible adult age 25 or older as required by New Hampshire supervision rules.

The vehicle must have:

• ? Valid registration with current stickers.
• ? Valid proof of insurance for that vehicle.
• All required forms completed, including the Application for Driver License (DSMV 450).

Example: A teen in Manchester arrived with his mother's car but the registration had expired the previous month. The examiner canceled the test during the inspection, requiring a reschedule and a new fee.

Do you need extra mirrors for the New Hampshire road test?

No. Your vehicle only needs its standard, factory-installed mirrors to be intact and functional. Special mirrors are not required.

Mirror Standards and Backup Cameras

Examiners will check that mirrors are secure, uncracked, and provide a clear view.

Check the New Hampshire learner's permit guide for current rules and fees.

• ? Backup cameras are allowed but cannot be relied upon. Examiners often cover the screen with a clipboard during parking maneuvers to test your use of mirrors and head checks.
• ? Small blind-spot mirrors are allowed but do not replace the need for a physical head check before changing lanes.

Example: An applicant in Concord had a large crack across the driver's side mirror. The examiner pointed it out during the pre-check and refused to conduct the test, citing an obstructed view.

What vehicle problems can stop the road test before it starts?

• The most common pre-test failures are broken brake lights, non-working turn signals, expired registration or insurance, and cracked windshields.
• The examiner checks all equipment before you leave the lot.
• A failed inspection forfeits your appointment slot with no rescheduling priority.

• Your car must have functioning brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, and horn.
• Bring valid registration, proof of insurance, and a current inspection sticker.
• The examiner checks all equipment before you leave the lot.
• A failed pre-check forfeits your appointment slot.

Can an unsafe vehicle stop the road test before you leave the DMV?

Yes. The examiner can refuse to conduct the road-skills test when the vehicle is not suitable or safe for the examination. Check the vehicle before the appointment so a preventable condition does not end the test before driving begins.

Expired Registration

An expired registration is an automatic fail. The registration must be valid on the day of your test.

Check your registration card and plate stickers a week before your appointment to allow time for renewal if needed, avoiding a wasted trip to the DMV.

Check Engine Light On

An illuminated Check Engine, ABS, or Airbag warning light is grounds for immediate test refusal. These lights indicate a potential safety issue.

Example: A driver in Nashua had their test canceled on the spot because the Check Engine light was on. They had ignored it, assuming it was a minor sensor issue, but the DMV rules treat any active warning light as a critical failure.

Faulty Safety Equipment

Any malfunctioning primary safety item, like a brake light, turn signal, or horn, will result in test cancellation.

Have a friend walk around your car and verify all lights and signals work while you operate them from the driver's seat the day before your test. This simple check can prevent a last-minute rejection.
