How many practice hours does New Hampshire require before a road test?

• ✓ Applicants under 18 must complete 40 hours of additional supervised driving, with at least 10 of those hours at night.
• ✗ New Hampshire does not issue a physical learner's permit to drivers under 16.
• You may begin practicing at age 15 and a half by carrying proof of age and following supervision rules.

Total Hours and Age-Based Requirements

The required practice time with a permit depends on your age.

These 40 hours are in addition to the 10 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction received during a state-approved driver's education course.

How to Log Your Supervised Driving Hours

You must document all required practice time with a permit using the official Driver's Out-of-Class Log Sheet.

• Form DSMV 509: Download and print the official Certification of Additional Supervised Driving (DSMV 509).
• Log Every Session: Record the date, total minutes driven, and night minutes for each practice session.
• ✓ Supervision and certification: The 40 hours must be completed under a licensed parent, stepparent, or legal guardian, or, if none is licensed, a licensed adult over age 25, and certified on DSMV 509.
• ✓ Bring to Test: Submit the signed, paper DSMV 509 form when you take your road test.

Does New Hampshire require a driving log, and how do you submit it?

Yes, if you are under 18, strict state laws require you to log 40 hours of supervised driving on the DSMV 509 form. If you are 18 or older, you are exempt from the mandatory log but must still pass the road test.

All New Hampshire permit requirements are covered in the New Hampshire permit guide.

How does NH DMV verify practice hours and what logging issues arise?

The DMV checks your log for accuracy and realistic timeframes. Here are answers to common questions and examples of issues.

• ✗ Can you estimate hours retroactively? No. You cannot guess your hours at the end. Logs must be filled out contemporaneously. A Manchester teen had his test rescheduled because his log showed 15 hours added in one block the night before; the examiner noted the identical pen ink for all entries.
• ✓ Do they actually check your log book? Yes. Examiners review the log for consistency. They check that night hours are distinguished and that the dates span a realistic learning period. An applicant in Nashua was questioned for logging 4 hours of practice on a school day followed by 3 hours at night, which the examiner deemed improbable for effective learning.
• ✓ Can you count driver's ed behind-the-wheel hours toward the 40? No. The 10 hours of driving with a certified instructor during driver's education are separate. Your 40 logged hours are additional practice required outside of professional instruction.

At the Concord office, Older sibling presented themselves as Leila's guardian. Denied; legal parent or guardian must appear, next slot 6 days. New Hampshire law: adult sibling status carries zero legal standing at any New Hampshire DMV location.

• One Manchester applicant found out the hard way: Parent's DL suspended for an unpaid infraction, not just expired.

Key Rules to Know

• ✓ Practice Start Age: Supervised practice may begin at age 15 and a half with a licensed supervisor 25+ in the front passenger seat and proof of age (original birth certificate or passport).
• Youth License Hold: Drivers under 21 hold a Youth Operator License (provisional) until age 21 after passing road test.
• ✓ Supervisor Position: The supervising driver must occupy the front passenger seat during all practice.

Avoiding Test Day Delays and Rejections

Missing documentation is a primary cause for rescheduling.

• Bring All Forms: You must present the completed DSMV 509, a completed Application for Driver License (DSMV 450), and if under 18, the Parental Consent Form (DSMV 38).
• ✓ Vehicle Requirements: Your test vehicle must be legally registered, insured, and have no obstructions. A driver in Derry was turned away because their vehicle's inspection sticker had expired the previous month.

Double-check your proof of age document before leaving for the test. A Salem applicant used a photocopy of their birth certificate and was rejected; the DMV requires the original or a state-issued certified copy.
