School Zone Speed Limit
New Hampshire School Zone Speed Limit: When 20 MPH Applies, Fines and Bus Laws
New Hampshire school zone laws set a 20 mph school zone speed limit when school is in session and children are present, or during the hours posted on school-zone signs. The rule applies statewide, from larger communities to the Seacoast, North Country and rural state routes near schools.
Drivers must also stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. On an undivided road, traffic in both directions must remain stopped until the warning equipment is deactivated.
| Rule | What Drivers Need to Know |
|---|---|
| New Hampshire school zone speed limit | 20 mph when active |
| Governing law | RSA 265:60-a |
| New Hampshire school zone hours | During posted school hours or when school is in session and children are present |
| School-bus passing fine | Up to $500 for a first offense |
| Automated enforcement | No statewide school-zone speed-camera program |
New Hampshire School Zone Laws: The 20 MPH Rule
The New Hampshire school zone speed limit is 20 mph when the zone is active. That is lower than the 25 mph limit many drivers may expect when entering New Hampshire from another New England state, so the posted school-zone sign should be treated as the controlling instruction.
Does the 20 MPH Rule Apply to K-12 School Zones?
RSA 265:60-a provides for school zones on roads adjacent to K-12 school property. Drivers entering a marked school zone should follow the posted reduced speed and the conditions shown on the signs.
When Is the 20 MPH School Zone Limit Active in New Hampshire?
School zones are established on roads adjacent to K-12 school property under RSA 265:60-a. Signs identify the reduced speed and may display the hours when the restriction is active. The posted school-zone sign is the controlling instruction for when the reduced limit applies.
School-Zone Activation: Posted Hours and Children Present
The available material states that drivers should reduce speed during the hours posted on the school-zone sign or when school is in session and children are present. When a sign lists specific hours, follow those posted hours and any conditions stated on the sign. Keep the reduced speed until the vehicle has cleared the marked zone; accelerating before the applicable exit point or sign can still result in a violation.
Does the 20 MPH Limit Apply Outside Posted School-Zone Hours?
No separate all-day school-zone limit is established in the available material. Drivers should follow the hours and conditions shown on the school-zone signs and the stated rule for periods when school is in session and children are present.
How Do Drivers Know Where a New Hampshire School Zone Begins and Ends?
Posted school-zone signs identify the reduced-speed area and any stated hours. Drivers should stay at the reduced limit through the marked zone and should not accelerate until they have cleared the zone and passed the applicable exit point or sign.
School Zone Speeding Penalties in New Hampshire: Fines, Points and Enforcement
New Hampshire has no statewide automated school-zone speed-camera program in the available material. The material does not establish whether separate local camera authority exists. The confirmed enforcement described here is by local police departments and New Hampshire State Police on state routes adjacent to school property.
No single fixed New Hampshire school-zone speeding fine is supported by the available material. The exact ticket amount should not be inferred, and the material does not support a comparison with ordinary speeding fines.
A speeding conviction can add 3 to 6 New Hampshire DMV speeding points under the state's point system. The available material does not identify what determines the exact point level within that range. Separately, accumulating 12 points within 12 months can trigger a mandatory license suspension.
Teen drivers holding a Youth Operator License may face additional consequences for a moving violation during the first year of licensure, including defensive-driving requirements.
When Must Drivers Stop for a School Bus in New Hampshire?
The New Hampshire school bus stop law under RSA 265:54 requires drivers to stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended. Passing a school bus in New Hampshire under those conditions is prohibited. On an undivided road, vehicles travelling in both directions must stop.
Must Opposite-Direction Traffic Stop for a School Bus?
Yes on an undivided road. Traffic approaching the stopped school bus from either direction must stop and remain stopped while the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
Divided Highway School Bus Exception
The divided highway school bus exception applies only when a physical raised barrier separates opposing traffic. Painted lines alone do not create the exception.
- Stop fully: Come to a complete stop when the bus activates its red lights and stop arm.
- Remain stopped: Do not proceed until the stop arm retracts and the red lights stop flashing.
- Check the road divider: A physical raised barrier is required for the divided-highway exception; painted lines alone do not qualify.
Passing a stopped school bus can result in a fine of up to $500 for a first offense. The rule is especially important on undivided two-lane roads where school buses may stop directly in the travel lane.
