New Hampshire does not issue a physical Class D learner-permit card. At age 15 and a half, you can practice with proof of age and a qualified licensed supervisor under RSA 263:25. The license-application paperwork comes later.
| Stage | What to carry or bring |
|---|---|
| Supervised practice at 15 and a half+ | Carry proof of age while driving. There is no Class D learner-permit card application. |
| License application | Bring the identity, residency, and application documents required for your credential. Applicants under 18 also need the driver-education, supervised-driving, and parent/guardian documents that apply. |
REAL ID requires one accepted identity document, one accepted Social Security number document, and two New Hampshire residency documents. The non-federally compliant license uses a different identity checklist and generally requires one New Hampshire residency document; the accepted identity combinations are listed on DSMV 634B.
The NH DMV accepts a certified U.S. birth certificate with raised seal, a valid U.S. passport or passport card, or an NH Non-Driver ID card as proof of age and identity for a learner's permit application.
When you apply for your Youth Operator License at 16, you must provide one primary proof of identity:
What if birth certificate name doesn't match current name? Bring a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order linking your birth name to your current legal name.
Full New Hampshire permit rules are at the New Hampshire learner's permit guide.
New Hampshire's residency checklist allows direct verification by a parent or guardian. If the parent or guardian is not present, that verification must be notarized. This helps a minor whose household bills are not in the teen's own name.
Do both New Hampshire residency documents need to show the same address? For REAL ID, the two residency items must support the legal New Hampshire address provided on the application.
For residency, use the document types on the DMV's current checklist and make sure the statement shows the required name, legal address and date. Bring a complete official printout rather than relying on a cropped phone screenshot. Identity documents that the DMV requires as original or certified documents still need to meet that separate rule.
Bring original proof of identity, proof of age, proof of NH residency such as a utility bill or bank statement dated within 60 days, and your Social Security card or equivalent documentation.
A candidate in Portsmouth brought a laminated Social Security card; the clerk refused it, stating it could be altered. He had to order a replacement card and reschedule his road test.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
