New Hampshire does not issue a physical learner's permit for standard passenger vehicles. The privilege to practice driving lasts as long as you meet state requirements.
For a Motorcycle Learner's Permit, the validity period is 45 days from issuance.
The permit validity period depends on the license type.
| License Type | Learner's Permit Issued? | Validity Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Car (Class D) | No | No expiration date for practice privilege. |
| Motorcycle | Yes | 45 days. |
Expiration date calculation: For a motorcycle permit, expiration is 45 calendar days from the issue date on the permit card.
Example: A Manchester teen thought his motorcycle permit expired on the 1st of the month, but it was issued on the 15th. He missed his road test appointment at the Manchester DMV on the 60th day, as his permit had already expired on the 45th day.
There is no standard Class D learner-permit card with an expiration date. RSA 263:25 allows an unlicensed person age 15 and a half or older to practice while being taught by a qualified licensed supervisor, unless the person's driving privilege is suspended or revoked.
Can you continue supervised practice after turning 18 without renewing a learner permit? Yes. There is no Class D learner-permit card to renew. An unlicensed adult may continue learning under RSA 263:25 when the supervision and eligibility conditions are met.
Standard Class D learners do not receive a learner-permit card, so there is no Class D permit expiration date. A motorcycle learner's permit is separate and is valid for 45 days, with one additional 45-day renewal available. If a Youth Operator License lapses, follow the driver-license renewal rules.
For Standard Drivers (Class D): There is no physical permit to expire. However, your driver's license application (DSMV 450) expires if you do not complete the road test within 12 months.
For Motorcycle Permits: Driving on an expired motorcycle permit is illegal.
Do your logged practice hours expire if permit expires? No. Logged driving hours for a Class D license do not expire if your application expires. You keep your completed hours.
All New Hampshire permit requirements are covered in the New Hampshire permit guide.
Check the New Hampshire learner's permit guide for current rules and fees.
Must you retake knowledge test when renewing expired permit? Yes. If your application expires, your previous knowledge test scores are invalid.
Can you still take road test if permit expired yesterday? For a standard Class D application, if it expired yesterday, you cannot take the road test. You must restart the process. For a motorcycle permit, you cannot take the road test if the permit expired yesterday.
Example: A Dover applicant passed her knowledge test but waited 13 months to schedule her road test. At the Dover DMV, she was told her application had expired, her $50 fee was forfeited, and she had to retake the written test that day.
A New Hampshire motorcycle learner permit is a real permit with a 45-day term. State law allows one additional 45-day renewal. If the permit is no longer valid after the available term, do not ride under that expired permit; follow the DMV's current motorcycle-permit process before practicing again.
There is no standard Class D learner-permit card to renew. A motorcycle learner's permit is valid for 45 days and may be renewed once for an additional 45 days.
Standard Car (Class D): No renewal process exists because no physical permit is issued.
Motorcycle Learner's Permit: You can renew it once.
How to renew a permit: You must renew in person at a DMV office.
Bring your own vehicle's registration and proof of insurance to the road test. Examiners at the Salem DMV will cancel the test immediately if these documents are missing from the vehicle you provide.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
