New Hampshire Permit Test Languages: Automated, Audio and Interpreter Options

• The current NH Driver's Manual lists automated knowledge testing in English, American Sign Language, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Farsi, and Mandarin Chinese.
• Automated oral testing with headphones is available.
• For an applicant who speaks or reads another language, current DMV rules provide for interpreter assistance where applicable.

Can you take the New Hampshire knowledge test in another language?

Yes. New Hampshire offers several automated language formats, automated oral testing, and interpreter assistance where the DMV rules allow it. The test's question count and passing standard do not change because of the language option.

New Hampshire knowledge-test language options

The current official NH Driver's Manual lists these automated test languages or formats:

• English
• American Sign Language (ASL)
• French
• Spanish
• Portuguese
• Arabic
• Farsi
• Mandarin Chinese

Is American Sign Language available for the New Hampshire knowledge test?

Yes. American Sign Language is one of the automated options listed in the current New Hampshire Driver's Manual.

Requesting language or interpreter help for the NH knowledge test

Tell the DMV which available test format you need when arranging or checking in for the knowledge test. If you need interpreter assistance because your language is not one of the automated options, contact the DMV before testing so the applicable interpreter process can be arranged.

• Automated option: Use one of the language/format choices listed in the current NH Driver's Manual.
• Oral testing: The DMV provides an automated oral-test option with headphones.
• Interpreter: Current Saf-C rules allow interpreter assistance where applicable for applicants who speak or read another language.

Does an interpreter-assisted NH knowledge test still require an 80% score?

Yes. Language assistance changes how the test is communicated, not the Class D passing standard. You still need 32 correct answers out of 40.

What if your language is not one of the automated test options? Contact the New Hampshire DMV before your appointment and ask what interpreter assistance can be arranged. Do not wait until test day to assume a language option will be available.
