What to Do After Receiving a Nevada Permit: Practice, Driver Training and Road-Test Preparation

Your Nevada instruction permit lets you start supervised practice. For drivers under 18, the next goal is to build the required practice record, complete driver education, keep a clean recent driving record and prepare for the Nevada road test. Adults 18 or older can use a permit for supervised practice before the skills test, but they do not follow the same teen six-month and 50-hour rules.

Rules That Apply Right After You Get a Nevada Permit

You may drive only when a qualified supervising driver is seated beside you. Keep your instruction permit with you whenever you drive. If you are under 18, also follow Nevada's minor-driver rules, including the 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. restriction except for travel to or from a scheduled event.

Can I Drive the Same Day I Get My Nevada Permit?

Yes, once DMV issues the permit, you may begin driving the same day if you have your permit with you and a qualified supervising driver is seated beside you. Do not drive home alone from the DMV.

This page gives the next-step overview. Detailed supervision rules belong on the Nevada supervisor-requirements page, and full driving restrictions belong on the permit-driving-rules page.

First Week After Receiving a Nevada Permit

Use the first week to confirm the rules, start your practice log if you are under 18, plan driver education if it applies, and choose safe low-traffic practice routes. Check your likely road-test timeline early so you do not discover missing training, paperwork or vehicle documents at the end.

Practice Hours Before the Nevada Road Test

Do Adults Need Practice Hours After Getting a Nevada Permit?

No. The 50-hour supervised-practice log is a teen licensing requirement, not an adult requirement. Adults 18 or older can still use an instruction permit to practice before the skills test, but they should focus on becoming road-test ready rather than trying to complete a teen hour log.

Preparing for the Nevada Driving Skills Test

Practice the skills that DMV will observe during the road test: lane control, turns, stops, speed control, observation, parking and safe responses to traffic. Do not rely on one route or one office feeling easier. Pick a DMV office that offers skills tests, has an appointment you can use and is in an area where you can practice legally and calmly.

Before test day, use the dedicated road-test documents and vehicle-requirements pages for the final checklist. This article should not replace those detailed checklists.

What Changes After I Pass the Nevada Road Test?

After you pass, the DMV completes the license transaction if every requirement is satisfied. Teen drivers should still follow any first-license restrictions that apply after licensing. This page only gives the transition overview; the detailed turning-18 and license-completion questions belong on their dedicated pages.
