Nevada's supervisor rules are equally strict. At the Reno office, a neighbor drove a teen while both parents were at work, no legal relationship recognized, denied on the spot. A legal parent or guardian must accompany the applicant; neighbor status carries zero legal standing at any Nevada DMV.

Basic Checks Before Using This Permit Guide

Use this page to understand what a Nevada instruction permit is and what it allows. For the actual application checklist, use the dedicated application, document, appointment and practice-hour guides.

Confirm you need a permit. Teens under 18 need one for the teen licensing path; adults 18+ may use one for supervised practice.
Know the main restriction. A permit means supervised driving only. It is not a solo-driving license.
Use the right owner page for next steps. Documents, appointments, practice logs and parent forms are covered in their dedicated Nevada guides.

Study the Nevada Driver Handbook and use the right checklist before your DMV visit.

Does Every First-Time Driver Need an Instruction Permit?

Drivers under 18 need a Nevada instruction permit as part of the teen licensing path. For drivers age 18 or older, the instruction permit is optional, but it is the legal way to practice on public roads before the road test.

Can You Own a Car With Only an Instruction Permit?

Vehicle ownership is separate from driving privileges. A permit does not let you drive alone; you still need a qualified supervising driver whenever you practice.

Nevada DMV Vision Test: 20/40 Cutoff, Restriction B, Same-Day Retest

Nevada requires 20/40 visual acuity in both eyes together for the DMV vision test and a field of vision of at least 140 degrees to pass the DMV vision screening for your instruction permit.

Nevada DMV's Vision Standards and How Is the Test Run

Nevada DMV uses a table-top optical screening device, typically an Optec 1000, at every testing center; you must clear 20/40 acuity in at least one eye before you proceed to the knowledge test.

Visual Acuity: 20/40 or better in at least one eye for unrestricted driving privileges
Field of Vision: At least 140 degrees of continuous horizontal vision
Testing Equipment: Most offices use optical screening devices; Snellen wall charts are backup options
Wear your prescription glasses or contact lenses during the test if needed for driving

The vision test is mandatory before taking the Nevada knowledge test. You must look into the machine and read letters or numbers clearly to proceed.

Can You Get a Nevada Permit If You Wear Glasses or Contacts?

Yes, corrective lenses earn you a Restriction B notation on your permit, which legally requires you to wear them every time you drive or face a misdemeanor under Nevada law.

If you need corrective lenses to pass, DMV adds Restriction B (Corrective Lenses) to your permit
