Nevada Permit Driving Rules: Supervision, Curfew and Passenger Limits

Nevada instruction permit holders must follow strict driving restrictions. The main rule is simple: you may practice driving only with a qualified supervisor in the front passenger seat. For the full permit overview, visit the Nevada learners permit guide.

Nevada Permit Supervision Requirement

You cannot drive alone with a Nevada instruction permit. A qualified licensed driver must sit in the front passenger seat every time you practice.

• The supervisor must be at least 21 years old.
• The supervisor must hold a valid driver's license and have at least one year of licensed driving experience.
• The supervisor must be sober, alert and able to guide the driver.
• For teen applicants, a moving violation can delay road-test eligibility because Nevada requires a clean six-month period before licensing.

For the full rule on who can sit beside you, see the Nevada supervisor requirements guide.

Adult permit-holder driving rules

Adults age 18 or older may choose to use a Nevada instruction permit for practice. If an adult practices under that permit, the same supervised-driving rule applies: no solo driving with the permit.

What Can You Do and Not Do With a Nevada Instruction Permit?

Your permit allows supervised practice on public roads. It does not give you full driving privileges.

Allowed with a qualified supervisor:

• Practice on ordinary streets and highways.
• Drive to school, work, appointments or practice areas when supervision is present.
• Log required practice hours, including required night practice for under-18 applicants.

Not allowed:

• Driving alone.
• Using the permit as if it were a full license.
• Ignoring Nevada's minor curfew or passenger-safety rules.

Can Nevada Permit Holders Drive With Friends and Passengers?

Permit holders may have passengers only when the qualified supervisor is present and the drive remains safe. All passengers must use seat belts, and the permit holder is responsible for safe driving.

Do passenger restrictions apply before or after getting a Nevada license?

During the permit stage, the key passenger rule is supervision. After a teen gets a license, Nevada's separate teen-passenger restriction applies for the first licensing period. Do not treat the permit stage and licensed-teen stage as the same rule.

School, Night and Freeway Driving With a Nevada Permit

School, night and freeway practice are allowed only when the permit holder is properly supervised and follows Nevada's minor-driving limits.

Can I drive to school with a Nevada permit?

Yes, but only with a qualified supervisor in the front passenger seat. A permit does not allow a student to drive to school alone.

Can a Nevada permit holder drive on the freeway?

Yes. Freeway practice is allowed with proper supervision. New drivers should build skill on lower-speed roads before practicing on busy highways.

Nevada permit curfew vs night-practice hours

Required night practice does not remove Nevada's minor curfew limits. Under-18 drivers should plan night practice legally, with supervision, and avoid the 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. period unless a permitted scheduled-event exception applies.

Common Nevada Permit Driving Situations

These common situations come up during supervised practice:

• Supervisor phone use: The learner driver must follow Nevada's handheld-phone law. The supervisor should stay alert and ready to guide the driver, but do not assume the supervising passenger automatically receives a distracted-driving citation for phone use.
• Drive-through services: Permitted with a qualified supervisor present.
• Private property movement: Moving a vehicle can still create safety and liability issues, so use supervision and caution.
• Vehicle condition: Lights, signals, tires and wipers should work before practice. Detailed road-test vehicle rules belong in the road-test vehicle requirements guide.

Permit Violations and Under-21 Alcohol Rules

Nevada treats permit violations seriously. This section gives only the driving-rule overview; detailed traffic-ticket and DUI consequences belong in the dedicated violation pages.

Where to Check Nevada Permit Documents and Fees

This page focuses on driving rules. For application paperwork, fees and practice-hour logs, use the dedicated guides instead of mixing those details into your driving-rule checklist.
