What Happens With Nevada DMV Test Retakes and Closing Time?

Late-Day Appointments and the Written-Test Cutoff

A late appointment does not extend written-testing hours. Nevada DMV says written testing closes 30 minutes to 1 hour before the office closes, so leave enough time to start the knowledge test before that cutoff.

Two common situations affect the instruction permit testing process.

Failing the Knowledge Test: If you fail, you cannot retake the test immediately the same day. You must leave and schedule a new appointment. A $10.00 retest fee applies when you return.
Running Out of Time Before Closing: If you pass everything but the office runs out of time to issue the permit before closing, they will process your paperwork. You will receive your temporary permit on the spot. DMV staff are required to complete issuance for customers who have successfully passed all requirements before close of business.

What Nevada-Specific DMV Rules Catch Permit Applicants Off Guard?

Nevada DMV rules have no tolerance for improvisation: these are the three that generate the most forfeited appointments.

Carlos arrived late in the afternoon and reached the testing area after written testing had closed. Nevada DMV says written testing closes 30 minutes to 1 hour before the office closes, so late-day appointments leave less buffer.

The 'Minor Affidavit': Parent or guardian signs financial responsibility on DMV 002 at DMV. See Minor Affidavit (DP-38) details.

Reno Example: A parent at the Reno DMV on Mill Street signed the form at home. The agent rejected it, requiring a notarized affidavit. The appointment was rescheduled for two days later.

Online Testing Option: Use KnowToDrive Nevada for online knowledge test. No extra fee listed beyond standard testing. If you fail online, you must wait 24 hours before retesting in person.

Kiosk Screen Failures: Las Vegas DMV kiosks are often unmanned, if the screen goes black mid-test, walk to the front desk immediately.

Las Vegas: One applicant's screen went black at Q22 with no staff nearby. Session timed out; retake next morning. Do not wait for the screen to recover on its own.
