Nebraska Permit Practice Hours: 50-Hour Requirement, Night Driving and Log Rules

You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice, with at least 10 of those hours at night, to qualify for a Provisional Operator's Permit (POP) in Nebraska if you are under 18. You need to log these hours to certify them to the DMV. Reference the Nebraska Driver's Manual for complete testing requirements.

How Many Supervised Driving Hours Does Nebraska Require?

Nebraska's required practice time with a permit depends on your age. Under-18 drivers face strict requirements while adults have more flexibility.

• Under 18: You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) and log them. You must hold your learner's permit for at least 6 months.
• 18 or Older: No minimum driving hours are required. You can take the DMV drive test as soon as you feel ready after getting your permit.

The 10 night hours must occur between sunset and sunrise. Dusk does not count.

How Should You Track Nebraska Supervised Driving Hours?

One Bellevue applicant arrived for a supervised driving log review. The DMV was closed for emergency maintenance. No email notification had been sent. They rebooked for three days later.

• Official Form: You submit the 50 Hour Certification (Form DMV 06-91), not a detailed logbook. Your parent or guardian signs it under penalty of law.
• Tracking Methods: Use the state's paper log or the official RoadReady app for accurate GPS tracking.

The paper log is Form DMV 06-91A, a suggested driving skills checklist with space to log dates, locations, times, and supervisor initials. Download it at Nebraska Supervised Driving Log.

All practice must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.

Nebraska DMV Log Verification: What Gets Checked

The DMV does check your certification. Falsifying the form is a Class IV Felony. See drive test details in the DMV Examiners Manual.

• Do they check the log? Yes. The DMV collects and files Form 06-91. Your signature is a sworn statement. An examiner in Omaha may ask clarifying questions if your submitted hours seem unrealistic.
• Can you estimate forgotten hours? No. You must reconstruct an accurate record. Guessing or estimating retroactively constitutes falsification. If you lose your log, delay your test until you can honestly certify 50 hours again.

A parent in Grand Island signed the 50-hour certification despite their child only completing about 30 hours. The DMV discovered the discrepancy during a routine audit after the POP was issued, resulting in permit cancellation and legal repercussions.

A driver used a basic notes app to track hours but forgot to record dates. When filling out Form 06-91, they couldn't prove the hours were completed after receiving their permit, forcing them to restart the logging process.

Which Activities Count Toward Nebraska's 50-Hour Requirement?

All supervised driving on public roads counts toward Nebraska's 50-hour requirement including highway, city, rural, night, and adverse weather conditions. Private lot practice and driving school simulator hours do not count.

See the Nebraska learner's permit guide for complete requirements.

Schedule your DMV drive test appointment online the moment you are eligible. Popular offices in Omaha and Lincoln book out 4-6 weeks. For complete Nebraska permit steps, visit US Learner Permits Nebraska.

Options for Meeting Nebraska's Supervised Hour Requirements

Nebraska permit holders can meet the 50-hour requirement through family supervision, a licensed driving school, or a combination. Professional school hours count toward the log if signed by a certified instructor.

If you choose the log method, you must take and pass the DMV driving test. Driver safety courses waive both tests only if taken after permit issuance or with prior school permit. View approved courses for the alternative path.

Before your drive test, call your testing office to confirm they have exam vehicles available. Some locations, like the one in North Platte, have limited cars.

Avoiding Road Test Failures Tied to Nebraska's Hour Requirements

Nebraska DMV requires your completed 50-hour log at the time of road test scheduling, not just on test day. Arriving without the signed log results in automatic test cancellation with no same-day exception.

• POP applicants can fail up to six drive tests before needing a driver safety course. The three-fail rule applies only to Class O licenses.
• Bring your signed Form 06-91, your learner's permit, and proof of identity. Forgetting the certification form at home means an automatic reschedule.

Practice parallel parking and 3-point turns in a car similar to the DMV's test vehicle. Many failures at the Scottsbluff office occur because applicants practiced only in a large SUV but the test car is a compact sedan, throwing off their reference points.
