Nebraska Permit Test Failure: Retake Rules After a Failed Knowledge Test

Failed the Nebraska knowledge test? You cannot retake a failed written test the same day. Repeated failures can trigger additional requirements, explained below.

What Happens Immediately After You Fail the Nebraska Permit Test?

One Kearney applicant had a strong first pass through the test. During review, they changed an answer on a road sign question they felt uncertain about. The first answer had been correct. They failed by one question.

• No same-day retest: Nebraska DMV does not allow a failed written test to be retaken the same day.
• The kiosk displays missed categories like Right of Way or Signage.
• Ask the examiner for a printout before leaving - once you exit, the detailed results are gone.

Nebraska Permit Test Attempt Limits and Multiple Failures

Nebraska DMV's written-test rule does not state a lifetime maximum number of attempts. A failed written test cannot be retaken the same day. After six failed written tests, you must either wait 90 days from the last failed test or show proof of successfully completing a driver training course before retesting.

How many times can I take or fail the Nebraska permit test?

The DMV rule does not set a lifetime attempt cap. The key threshold is six failed written tests, which triggers the training-or-90-day requirement before further testing.

What happens if I fail the Nebraska permit test 2 or 3 times?

Failures two or three do not trigger the six-failure rule. You still cannot retake a failed written test on the same day.

What happens if I fail the Nebraska permit test 6 times?

After six failed written tests, you must wait 90 days from the date of the last written test or show proof that you successfully completed a driver training course before retesting.

Is there a maximum number of failed attempts?

The Nebraska DMV rule does not state a lifetime maximum. It explains what happens after six failed written tests rather than setting a permanent six-attempt cap.

Nebraska Permit Test Retake Costs

Nebraska DMV does not list a separate $5 or $13 Class O knowledge-test retake fee. The $13 amount is the original LPD document fee, not a fee charged for each failed written-test attempt.

Do I have to pay to retake the Nebraska permit test?

Not as a separate standard DMV retest fee. Keep the permit issuance fee and any other service costs separate from the written-test retest rule.

Studying Between Nebraska Permit Test Attempts - What Actually Helps

Use the failed attempt to identify what to review, then study the current Nebraska Driver's Manual and the official practice test. Detailed topic-by-topic study strategy belongs on the Practice Tests, Hardest Test Topics and Road Sign Questions pages.

Practice with Shoro AI's Nebraska permit prep before test day to prepare better and improve your chances of passing on the first attempt; if you are retaking it, use the same practice to target weak areas.

• Review the rules or categories you missed.
• Use Nebraska's official practice test with the current Driver's Manual.
• If reading the test is difficult, use the approved audio or language-format options described on the Test Language Options and Disability Accommodations pages.

Appealing a Failed Nebraska Permit Test Score

Nebraska DMV has no formal appeal process for failed knowledge test scores. If you believe a question was flawed, you may file a written complaint through the DMV consumer assistance line after your visit.

• Appeals Not Allowed: Computer-graded results are final with no score challenges permitted.
• Only exception is verifiable administrative error or equipment malfunction reported to supervisor immediately.
• Driving Record Impact: Failed attempts remain internal administrative records and do not appear on public driving records.
• Only passed tests and issued permits are recorded permanently.

Nebraska Permit Test Retake Checklist

Follow any Return for Services or other instructions DMV gave you after the failed attempt. Do not assume you must repeat the full original document checklist on every visit.

• Address proof: Once Nebraska DMV has verified the address, it generally is not reverified on later visits unless the address changes.
• Lawful-status documents: Applicants using USCIS documents should follow DMV instructions for subsequent visits and SAVE verification.
• Testing rules: Cell phones may not be on or in use during the written test.
• Office timing: Use the exact office's current testing days and hours. Nebraska's current end-of-day policy says an applicant already inside before closing receives service through the written test.

Detailed document requirements and office-hour planning belong on the Required Documents and DFA Hours & Best Times pages.
