Montana Road Test Waiting Period: Teen GDL Hold and Adult Eligibility

Montana road-test eligibility depends on age and licensing path. For the ordinary first-time teen path, an under-18 applicant must hold the NCLP for at least 6 months + 1 day and satisfy the applicable teen GDL requirements before advancing. Drivers 18 and older are not subject to that teen GDL holding period.

Montana's Under-18 Road Test Holding Period

The ordinary first-time teen path has a minimum NCLP holding period, while current law also contains limited statutory exceptions for specific situations. The direct timing answer is below.

See Required Practice Hours for the detailed hour rules.

Is Montana's road-test wait 6 months or 6 months plus 1 day?

For the ordinary first-time under-18 path, Montana MVD requires the NCLP to be held for at least 6 months plus 1 day before advancement.

Do adults have to hold a Montana learner permit for a minimum number of days?

No teen GDL minimum holding period applies to applicants age 18 or older. They still must meet the adult licensing and road-test requirements.

Booking and Test Availability

Road-test appointment availability is separate from legal eligibility. Once you know your eligible date, use Montana's appointment system to find a suitable slot. Booking tactics, cancellations and alternate stations belong in the dedicated Appointment Scheduling guide rather than this waiting-period page.

Traffic Violations and Road-Test Eligibility

Traffic, alcohol or drug violations can affect an under-18 applicant's eligibility to advance because the required GDL certification considers the applicant's recent record. The direct six-month rule is answered below.

Failing a road test does not itself restart the teen GDL holding period. Broader violation consequences belong in Traffic Violations on a Permit.

Does a traffic ticket mean I need another six violation-free months before advancing?

For an under-18 applicant, the key requirement is a six-month period immediately before advancement with no qualifying traffic, alcohol or drug conviction or pending citation. A qualifying violation can therefore delay advancement.

Other Requirements to Meet Before Your Road Test

Keep this page focused on when the applicant is eligible. Road-test documents and vehicle requirements differ by age and belong in the dedicated checklists. If a Class D application is needed, the current form is 11-1400, not Form 21-1800.

• Adults: current learner permit, current vehicle registration, proof of insurance and a suitable vehicle.
• Under 18: the applicable teen GDL documents, including the separate Teen Driving Log and Form 21-1600 certification, plus the current permit, registration and insurance. Form 21-1600 is not the driving log.
