You can schedule your road test at designated Driver License Exam Stations throughout Montana. Your learner's permit is valid statewide, giving you location flexibility for scheduling.
QUICK NAVIGATION
Montana road-test options can include state MVD Driver License Exam Stations and approved cooperative/private testing pathways. The key question is whether the location is authorized to administer or certify the standardized Class D road test.
| Location type | What it does |
|---|---|
| MVD Driver License Exam Station | State driver-testing location offering the services listed for that station. |
| Certified Cooperative Driver Testing Program (CDTP) | An approved program may administer the standardized road test and certify successful completion to MVD. |
| Authorized private testing provider | Availability and extra provider fees may differ; confirm that the provider is authorized for the Class D service you need. |
You may use a Driver License Exam Station that offers the Class D road-test service, subject to current appointment and service availability. Check the station listing before booking.
Some authorized private testing options may offer Class D testing and may charge an additional provider fee. Confirm that the specific provider is authorized for the road-test service you need before booking.
Course completion alone does not automatically waive the road test. A waiver depends on successful standardized testing through an approved certified Cooperative Driver Testing Program and certification of that result to MVD.
Do not assume a county treasurer office is a driver-testing location. Use Montana's Driver License Exam Station or other authorized testing listings to find Class D road-test services.
Location can affect appointment availability, travel distance and third-party fees, but it does not create a different official Class D test standard. Use the current MVD station/provider listings and the dedicated Appointment Scheduling guide rather than treating one office as inherently easier.
The required paperwork does not become easier or harder based on location. Form 11-1400 is the current Class D application for both adults and minors; there is no separate 11-1402 teen application.
Under-18 applicants also bring the applicable GDL documents, including the separate Teen Driving Log and Form 21-1600 certification. Current MVD guidance accepts physical or digital proof of insurance for the road-test vehicle. Use Road Test Documents for the complete checklist.
Choose a location based on authorized service, appointment availability, travel distance, traffic conditions and any third-party fee. Do not treat reported pass rates or an unofficial "easy route" as evidence that the legal test standard changes by location.
Before the appointment, confirm the location, required paperwork and test-vehicle condition. Detailed vehicle checks belong in Vehicle Requirements; document details belong in Road Test Documents.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
