Bringing the correct paperwork is mandatory to take your road test in Montana. Missing a single item results in an immediate cancellation.
QUICK NAVIGATION
Road-test documents differ between adults and under-18 applicants.
| Applicant | Core road-test documents |
|---|---|
| 18+ | Current learner permit, current vehicle registration and proof of insurance for the test vehicle. |
| Under 18 | Current NCLP, registration and insurance, plus the teen GDL documents required for advancement. MVD also requires the applicable identity, residency and authorized-presence documents again at this stage. |
Montana accepts proof of insurance physically or digitally on an electronic device. Keep this page focused on paperwork; detailed vehicle condition rules belong in Vehicle Requirements.
No. The teen GDL driving-log requirement does not apply to an applicant age 18 or older. Adults bring the current learner permit, registration, proof of insurance and the other items MVD requires for the adult road-test process.
Under-18 applicants bring both the Teen Driving Log and Form 21-1600 Graduated Driver Licensing Certification. They are separate documents. The supervised-hour total depends on the teen's approved education path, so 50/10 should not be described as the only possible requirement.
Driver-education documentation, when applicable to the applicant's path, is separate from the driving log and Form 21-1600.
Yes. Montana MVD says the teen driving log may be provided as a hard copy or as a digital version on an electronic device.
No. The Teen Driving Log records supervised drives. Form 21-1600 is the Graduated Driver Licensing Certification used to certify completion of the applicable teen GDL requirements.
Yes. Current MVD guidance tells under-18 applicants advancing from the NCLP to bring the applicable identity, residency and authorized-presence documents again, along with the teen GDL paperwork.
If a required document is missing or invalid, the road test may not proceed and a new appointment may be necessary. Check current MVD requirements before leaving home rather than relying on individual office anecdotes.
A responsible adult is not automatically invalid merely because that person is an aunt or another non-parent adult; Form 21-1600 expressly allows certification by a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult.
This page should list paperwork, not duplicate the full pre-test vehicle inspection. For the vehicle itself, bring current registration and proof of insurance and use Vehicle Requirements for mechanical condition.
If MVD previously required a medical evaluation, the current Driver Medical Evaluation is Form 20-1900, not PR-4. Wear any corrective lenses required by your permit.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
