Montana's state-approved Traffic Education route is not limited to 14.5-year-olds. Eligible teens can take an approved Traffic Education course, which includes behind-the-wheel instruction. Teens 15 and older can also use the regular MVD learner-permit route without completing Traffic Education. Optional private lessons are separate from the state-approved school program.

Three different types of driving instruction should not be mixed together:
| Type | What it is | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| State-approved Traffic Education | An approved teen course that includes at least 6 hours of behind-the-wheel in-traffic instruction. | Part of that education pathway; teens 15+ may instead use the regular MVD permit route. |
| Supervised practice | Practice with a qualifying supervising driver after the learner permit is issued. | Required for under-18 GDL applicants according to the applicable path. Current law distinguishes 50/10 and 75/15 requirements by approved education pathway. |
| Optional private lessons | Extra instruction purchased from a private instructor or school. | Useful for skills practice but not automatically equivalent to an approved Traffic Education program. |
Parents or other qualifying adults may supervise practice drives; the supervised hours are not restricted to parents only. Detailed totals belong in Required Practice Hours.
Yes. Montana's approved Traffic Education programs are not limited to 14-and-a-half-year-olds. Eligible older teens may enroll, while teens 15 and older may also use the regular MVD learner-permit route.
No. Optional private lessons can help build skills, but they are not automatically the same as an OPI-approved Traffic Education course.
No. The behind-the-wheel instruction built into the approved course is part of that course. Parent or other qualifying-adult practice is a separate supervised-practice requirement.
For the state-approved Traffic Education route, follow the school's approved instructor and completion requirements. Optional private driving lessons are a separate service and should not be described as automatically equivalent to OPI Traffic Education.
Keep the teen GDL paperwork separate: the Teen Driving Log tracks supervised practice, while Form 21-1600 is the Graduated Driver Licensing Certification used later in the advancement process. Form 21-1600 is not the driving log.
Optional private lessons can help with skill-building, but they are separate from Montana's approved Traffic Education requirements. For provider prices and package comparisons, use Behind-the-Wheel Training Cost.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
