Missouri Permit Next Steps: Practice, Road Test and License Issuance

Your Missouri Class F Instruction Permit starts the under-18 Graduated Driver License (GDL) practice period if you are younger than 18. Teen applicants must hold the permit at least 182 days, complete 40 supervised driving hours including 10 at night, and meet the clean-record requirements before qualifying for an Intermediate License. Applicants age 18 or older do not have the 182-day GDL holding requirement. See the Missouri GDL requirements.

What Are Missouri's Practice Hour and Log Requirements Before the Road Test?

Under-18 GDL applicants need 40 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. A parent, legal guardian, or grandparent verifies completion when the teen applies for the Intermediate License.

Form 4901 is provided as a convenient way to track and verify the hours; it is not the only required log format.

How Should You Practice Driving With a Missouri Learners Permit?

Your instruction permit requires qualified supervision while you practice. If you are under 16, Missouri allows supervision by a parent, grandparent, guardian, qualified instructor, or a licensed driver age 25 or older who has been licensed at least three years and has written parental or guardian permission. At age 16 or 17, a licensed driver age 21 or older may supervise. See RSMo 302.130.

• Practice varied conditions: Include residential streets, higher-speed roads, parking, lane changes, and night driving.
• Follow permit rules: Keep the permit with you and drive only with a qualified supervisor.
• Phone use: Follow Missouri's current hands-free requirements while operating the vehicle.

How Do You Prepare for the Missouri Driving Skills Test?

Before the road test: Make sure you are eligible to test and use a vehicle that meets MSHP requirements. Detailed test-day documents and vehicle checks belong in the dedicated road-test document and vehicle guides.

1. Take the skills test with MSHP. The test evaluates vehicle control and safe driving.
2. After passing: MSHP completes your Driver Examination Record (Form 100). Passing the skills test by itself does not authorize you to drive alone.
3. Complete licensing at DOR: Take the completed examination record to a Missouri license office, where DOR verifies the remaining requirements and issues the appropriate license.

Can I drive alone immediately after passing the Missouri road test?

No. Passing the MSHP skills test does not by itself give you permission to drive alone. Complete the licensing transaction at a Missouri DOR license office and make sure you have the credential that authorizes your next driving stage before driving without permit supervision.

Where do I go after passing the Missouri road test?

Take the completed Driver Examination Record (Form 100) from MSHP to a Missouri DOR license office. DOR checks the remaining licensing requirements, collects the applicable license fee, and issues the temporary paper credential while the permanent card is produced and mailed.

Do I get an Intermediate License or a full Class F license after passing?

That depends on your age and GDL status. A qualifying 16- or 17-year-old generally moves to the Intermediate License. An applicant age 18 or older who meets the Class F requirements does not have to enter the Intermediate License stage.

What Restrictions Come With the Missouri Intermediate License?

For an under-18 applicant who meets the GDL requirements, the next credential is the Intermediate License. Its restrictions include the 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM driving restriction and limits on non-family passengers under 19. Applicants age 18 or older are not required to obtain an Intermediate License under the GDL pathway.

The current Missouri fee for an Intermediate Class F license is $14 total. See the DOR fee chart for current amounts.
