The official Missouri Driver Guide is the official study guide for the state's written exam. Here is where to find it, what to study, and its cost.
Download the free official Missouri Driver Guide PDF from dor.mo.gov; never pay for the handbook. The official audio version is available on the DOR YouTube channel, and printed copies may be free at MSHP stations or DOR license offices while supplies last.
A Kansas City applicant visited the Independence license office on a Monday morning only to find they were out of printed guides. Calling the Grandview office first confirmed they had copies, saving time and a wasted trip.
DOR's forms page currently says printed Driver Guides are temporarily out of stock, while the digital guide remains available online. Printed availability can change, so check the DOR forms page if you prefer a paper copy.
For a focused written-test study plan, start with these current Driver Guide sections:
Chapter 4 is Sharing the Road and is useful supporting study, but it is not the road-sign chapter.
Start with Chapter 2 (Driver Examination), then study the driving-law and safety chapters closely, especially Chapter 3 (Rules of the Road), Chapter 4 (Sharing the Road), Chapter 7 (Pavement Marking, Traffic Signs, and Signals), Chapter 10 (Alcohol, Drugs, and Driving), Chapter 11 (Point System), and Chapter 16 (Distracted Driving and Electronic Communication Devices). Do not skip the remaining noncommercial driving material.
The Driver Guide is the official source for the Class F written-test material, so it should be your main study source. Practice tests are optional tools to check whether you understand the guide; they should not replace reading the current guide.
The Missouri Driver Guide is free in all formats. You never need to pay for the official handbook.
A Springfield student used a 2023 PDF from a third-party site and failed because it didn't include updated passenger restrictions for intermediate licenses. Downloading the official PDF ensured they studied the correct rules.
| Resource | Format | Cost | How to Access |

Save the official PDF to your phone before your exam. Applicants at the St. Louis South County exam station have reported poor office Wi-Fi, making last-minute downloads impossible.
Use the current DOR edition. Laws, fees, forms, and testing systems can change, so an older guide may contain outdated details even when many driving rules remain the same. Check the official Missouri Driver Guide page before studying.
The Driver Guide is the official study source for the written test; it is not a substitute for the separate permit-application and document checklists.
For application steps, current forms, residency documents, and REAL ID requirements, use the dedicated application and eligibility/documentation pages. Keeping those details there prevents handbook study guidance from becoming an application-process article.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
