For a permit-to-license path that includes an instruction permit, current Missouri state fees vary by age and license stage. An age 18-20 permit-plus-full-license path totals $26.50, a full teen GDL path through the under-21 full license totals $40.50, and a permit-plus-six-year Class F path for age 21+ totals $43. Optional lessons, insurance, and vehicle costs are separate.
Missouri DOR publishes the current total fee for each credential. The MSHP written and Class F skills examinations are free.
| Stage / Item | Current Total |
|---|---|
| Instruction Permit (Class F) | $10.00 |
| Intermediate License (Ages 16-17) | $14.00 |
| Full Class F License (Up to 3 years, including ages 18-20) | $16.50 |
| Full Class F License (Up to 6 years, eligible applicants) | $33.00 |
| MSHP Written / Class F Skills Tests | $0.00 |
For fee-by-fee payment details, use the dedicated permit-fee page and the official Missouri DOR fee chart.
The total depends on the age and licensing path. Current state transaction totals are $40.50 for a teen who completes the permit, intermediate license, and 3-year Class F license before age 21; $26.50 for an age 18-20 applicant using a permit before the 3-year Class F license; and $43 for an age 21+ applicant using a permit before a 6-year Class F license.
For a teen completing the full GDL sequence before age 21, the current state fees are $10 for the instruction permit, $14 for the intermediate license, and $16.50 for the 3-year Class F license, for a total of $40.50.
Turning 18 changes the GDL progression rules, but it does not make legal practice driving free of permit requirements. If you need to practice on public roads before the skills test, an instruction permit is still the normal route.
| Path | Current State Fees |
|---|---|
| Teen GDL through Intermediate License | Permit $10 + Intermediate $14 = $24.00 |
| Teen GDL through Full License before 21 | Permit $10 + Intermediate $14 + 3-year Class F $16.50 = $40.50 |
| Age 18-20 permit + Full License | Permit $10 + 3-year Class F $16.50 = $26.50 |
| Age 21+ permit + 6-year Class F | Permit $10 + 6-year Class F $33 = $43.00 |
MSHP does not charge a state fee to retake the written or Class F skills test. A failed attempt therefore does not create another DOR test fee.
The mandatory DOR fee is only one part of the budget. Keep optional and transaction-specific costs separate from the state license fee.
The applicable DOR credential fees are mandatory for the licensing path you use. Private driving lessons, driving-school vehicle charges, extra transportation, and similar training expenses are optional or situation-specific. Insurance costs depend on the household and insurer and are not DOR licensing fees.
Paid instruction changes the optional training budget, not the amount Missouri charges for the Class F state examination.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
