A Missouri Class F instruction permit is valid for 12 months from issuance. The expiration date is one year from your application day at the license office, not your birthday.
Driving with an expired Missouri instruction permit is illegal. You face a Class D misdemeanor citation with fines up to $500.
You cannot log driving practice hours toward the required 40 hours (including 10 at night) while your permit is expired. Practice hours already logged on your Driver Experience Log Form 4901 remain valid, but you can't add new hours until you renew.
Schedule your road test at least 3 weeks before expiration to account for examiner cancellations or weather delays, this buffer prevents a last-minute renewal scramble.
Renew in person at any Department of Revenue license office. No online renewal exists. There's no limit on renewals if you follow the grace period rule.
Renewal requirements depend on expiration length:
| Expiration Status | Action Required | Testing Needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Not expired, or expired less than 184 days | Renew at license office | No. Pay $10.00 and pass vision screening. |
| Expired more than 184 days | Restart application process | Yes. Retake the 25-question written test, road sign test, and vision exam at a Highway Patrol station first. |
You can renew up to 184 days before expiration. Applying early extends your permit validity without losing your original practice hours, this is one of the few times Missouri actually makes things easier on you.
Independence applicants know this trap well, an ID expired the month of a recent move, with unpacking chaos pushing renewal off the radar. Turned away; DOR appointment set 8 days out. Moving and renewal are separate tasks; don't let packing boxes delay your renewal.
If you must retake the written test at a Highway Patrol exam station after the 184-day mark, arrive early. Stations like Jefferson City operate first-come, first-served with limited seating. Late arrivals get sent home.
Missouri's published GDL guidance does not say that an ordinary instruction-permit renewal restarts the 182-day clock. Keep your prior permit information if your 182-day period crosses a renewal and confirm the recorded issue history with DOR before scheduling the intermediate-license step.
DOR does not publish a separate rule requiring completed behind-the-wheel hours to restart after renewal. Keep the same driving log and continue until you have the required 40 hours, including 10 nighttime hours, if you are still in the under-18 GDL path.
Visit any Missouri Department of Revenue license office with these items. Missing even one document means rejection at the counter.
If you're under 18, a parent or guardian must accompany you to sign the parental permission statement again.
A St. Louis County learner went to the Olive Boulevard office without residency proof, assuming their old information was on file. Got turned away and returned the next day with a bank statement, wasting a half-day for their supervising driver.
One Columbia applicant's cached browser had the previous DOR form version, updated 3 days earlier. Rejected; current version printed at the branch, resubmitted within the hour. Always reload dor.mo.gov fresh the morning of your visit, not from a saved bookmark. Use the DOR Document Selector to generate your personalized checklist and print it that morning.
Not simply because you renew the permit. The current Missouri Driver Guide says an instruction permit may be renewed as many times as needed without taking additional written tests. Separate retesting rules can apply later if prior test results are more than one year old when you move to the next license stage.
A full Missouri driver's license is valid for 3 or 6 years. An instruction permit lasts only 12 months.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
