Mississippi Permit Next Steps: From Learner's Permit to Class R License

Once your Mississippi learner's permit is issued, the next step is to practice legally and meet the age-based requirements for a Regular Class R license. Mississippi is not currently giving a regular Class R road test, so the key milestones are the permit holding rule, supervised practice where required, and the correct license-issuance documents.

Do I need a road test after getting a Mississippi learner's permit?

No. Mississippi is not currently giving a regular Class R road test. Your next licensing step depends on your age, permit holding requirement, and whether the Road Test Waiver Affidavit applies to you.

Mississippi Driving Restrictions After a Learner's Permit

Your permit stays valid for two years. The licensing timeline depends on your age, so the next step is not the same for every permit holder.

When can I upgrade my Mississippi learner's permit to a Class R license?

If you are still under 17, complete the applicable permit holding period and bring the Road Test Waiver Affidavit when required. At age 17 or older, Mississippi does not apply the standard 12-month holding period.

Does a 17-year-old need the Mississippi Road Test Waiver Affidavit?

No. Current Mississippi DSB guidance says applicants age 17 and older do not need the Road Test Waiver Affidavit.

Beginning July 1, 2027, Mississippi's driver-education requirement applies before a first driver's license is issued to a person who has not previously held a driver's license. It does not prevent an otherwise eligible person under 18 from receiving a learner's permit.

If your permit expires, follow the current Driver Service Bureau process for a new or renewed permit before continuing to the Class R step.

Mississippi Permit Rules You Must Follow on Every Practice Drive

A learner's permit holder must drive with a licensed operator age 21 or older occupying the seat beside the driver. Follow Mississippi traffic laws and the permit restrictions on every practice drive.

For applicants who must use the Road Test Waiver Affidavit, the current licensing path requires at least 50 hours of supervised driving. The current affidavit does not state a separate night-hour minimum. Keep enough records to let the parent, teacher, or guardian completing the affidavit certify the required practice accurately. Detailed hour tracking belongs in the Required Practice Hours guide.

Practice in varied conditions such as city traffic, rural roads, rain, night driving, and highway merging while remaining within the permit rules.

Class R Upgrade Timing After a Mississippi Permit

Mississippi is not currently giving a regular Class R skills road test. When you become eligible for Class R, focus on the license-issuance requirements rather than road-test maneuvers or a test vehicle.

• Permit status: Bring your valid Mississippi learner's permit and make sure you have satisfied the age-based holding requirement.
• Under-17 waiver: If the current waiver requirement applies to you, bring the completed Road Test Waiver Affidavit certifying the required supervised driving.
• Documents: Bring the current identity, Social Security, residency, and school-attendance documents that apply to your situation. Use the dedicated Required Documents page for the full checklist.
• Fees: The current four-year Regular Class R license fee is separate from the $7 learner's permit fee.

Applicants who meet the current requirements move from the learner's permit directly to a Regular Class R license without an extra provisional licensing stage.
