Apply during winter months or mid-month to avoid rushesPostal delaysAdds 3-5 business daysEnsure mailbox has clear address labeling

Triple-check your mailing address on the temporary receipt before leaving DPS. Address errors cause most missing permits and require return visits plus $5.00 duplicate fees.

A Biloxi family moved after applying but forgot to update their address with DPS. The permit went to their old address and was returned to the state. They discovered the problem only when their 30-day temporary permit expired, forcing a special trip to Gulfport office for resolution and delaying their permit by over a month.

What if my temporary Mississippi permit expires before the plastic card arrives?

Do not assume the temporary paper credential is automatically extended. Contact the Driver Service Bureau before it expires if the plastic card has not arrived, and follow the replacement or temporary-document instructions DSB gives you.

Can I track my Mississippi learner's permit in the mail?

DSB does not publish package-style tracking for mailed permits. If the card is overdue, contact Driver Services at 601-487-7028 and verify that the mailing address on your record is correct. DSB's FAQ says a credential lost after mailing requires a duplicate transaction.

Factors That Delay Mississippi Permit Processing

Document problems, test failures, and application errors create the most permit delays.

Missing documents: Bring original birth certificate, Social Security card, and two Mississippi residency proofs - school attendance forms must be dated within 30 days
Test failure: Failed knowledge test requires next business day wait for retake; three failures trigger mandatory 30-day waiting period
Unsigned applications: Applicants under 17 need the required parent/guardian signatures notarized before submission

For applicants under 17, download Form DL-41 at home and get the required parent or guardian signatures notarized before your appointment. This helps prevent an incomplete application from delaying permit issuance.

Study the Mississippi Driver Handbook thoroughly before your test. Preparation prevents retake delays and additional trips.
