Your Massachusetts learner's permit starts the supervised-driving stage. If you are under 18, you also need the JOL practice, driver-education, clean-record, and permit-holding requirements before the road test. Adults 18+ do not have the six-month JOL permit-holding rule.
Once the permit is issued, you must follow the learner-permit rules whenever you drive. A qualified supervising driver must sit beside you. Permit holders under 18 also cannot drive between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM unless the statutory nighttime-supervision exception applies.
For an under-18 JOL applicant, the required clean driving record matters during the six-consecutive-month eligibility period. If the permit is suspended, the permit becomes invalid and the six-month period starts again after the suspension ends. Detailed penalties belong in the traffic-violation and driving-alone guides.
| After You Get the Permit | Under 18 | Age 18+ |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified supervisor while practicing | Required | Required |
| Driver education for Class D licensing | Required for JOL | Not required under the teen JOL program |
| Additional supervised practice hours for JOL | 40 hours, or 30 with an approved driver-skills development program | No JOL practice-hour minimum |
| Six-month permit-holding rule | Required, with the other JOL eligibility rules | No mandatory Class D permit-holding period |
Applicants under 18 need at least 40 additional hours of supervised driving before the JOL road test, or 30 hours after completing an approved driver-skills development program. A parent or guardian certifies the required hours on the road-test application.
The official Supervised Driving Log is useful for tracking practice, but Massachusetts does not require RoadReady or a 24-hour app confirmation for the hours to count. See the dedicated practice-hours guide for logging details.
Driver education is part of the JOL licensing path for applicants under 18. Adults 18+ are not required to complete the teen driver-education program. For the classroom, instructor-driving, observation, and parent-class requirements, use the dedicated driver-education and behind-the-wheel guides.
Applicants under 18 can take the road test once they meet the permit-holding, clean-record, driver-education, and supervised-practice requirements. Applicants 18+ do not have a mandatory Class D permit-holding period.
The $35 road-test fee and $50 license fee may be paid before or after the road test. Prepayment is optional; the license cannot be issued until the required fees are paid. See the dedicated road-test documents and vehicle-requirements pages for the full checklist.
The road-test fee is $35 and the Class D license fee is $50. Your learner's-permit fee was paid earlier in the process. For retakes, optional driving-school costs, and a full permit-to-license budget, use the dedicated Fees & Costs pages.
Passing the road test is not the only step in license issuance. Once the RMV records the passing result and all required fees are paid, follow the issuance instructions tied to your test result before driving as a licensed driver.
Your Class D license is not fully issued until the required license fee is paid. If you did not prepay, complete the payment through the RMV after you pass.
If the required fees were not prepaid, Massachusetts gives you 60 calendar days after passing to complete the license-issuance process. If you do not finish within that period, you may have to take another road test.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"

"I was struggling with the specific road rules of my state until I used Shoro. The flashcards are a game changer for quick revision before the actual exam."
