The Massachusetts permit test is available in 37 languages, including American Sign Language (ASL). Choose your preferred option in the RMV testing system and check the current Mass.gov permit page for the latest language list.
The Massachusetts Class D/M permit exam is currently available in 37 languages, including American Sign Language (ASL). Choose the language offered by the RMV testing system that you are most comfortable using.
Check the current Mass.gov permit page for the complete language list before your test, since the available options can change.
The RMV tells applicants to choose from the languages available in its testing system, but its public guidance does not promise a mid-exam language switch. Choose the language you want before starting. If the wrong language appears, get help before beginning rather than assuming you can change it after the timer starts.
Is the passing score different in another language? No separate scoring standard is published for translated Class D/M exams. The standard Class D exam still requires 18 correct answers out of 25.
Massachusetts currently lists 37 Class D/M exam languages. If your preferred language is not available in the standard system, contact RMV Interpreter Services to ask about a foreign-language oral exam. The RMV asks applicants requesting that service to provide their name, contact information, requested language or dialect, and preferred RMV location.
You cannot have another person translate or coach you during the standard automated knowledge exam. Use one of the RMV's available exam languages instead.
Road-test language help follows separate rules. See the dedicated Road Test Language guide for that process.
Can you use a translation app or bilingual dictionary during the permit test? Do not use outside translation tools during the online exam. The RMV prohibits other electronics and reference materials in the testing room. Use an RMV-offered language or arrange the appropriate oral/interpreter service instead.
Yes, but audio and ASL are different options.
| Option | Where Available | Key Point |
|---|---|---|
| Translated text exam | RMV testing system / eligible online exam | Choose from the languages currently offered by the RMV. |
| Audio exam | Automated Testing Station and online exam | Questions can be presented with audio support where offered. |
| ASL exam | RMV Service Center | The ASL Class D/M exam is available in person and is not the standard online-at-home exam. |
| Person-to-person oral exam | By advance arrangement | This is a separate accommodation process and may require supporting disability documentation. |
For the full disability-accommodation process, use the dedicated Accessibility article.
While the permit test is multilingual, many road signs use standard English words or symbols. For the road test, an approved interpreter may translate the examiner's exact words under RMV rules, so an applicant using interpreter assistance does not have to independently understand every command in English.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
