Maine requires a learner's permit holder to be able to produce the permit while driving, but the law allows the credential to be carried and shown in electronic form. If you cannot produce either a physical permit or an electronic representation, you can still be cited. Maine learner's permit guide
Maine law allows the learner's permit to be carried in physical or electronic form during supervised driving.
You must be able to produce the permit when required, but it does not have to be only the physical card.
Maine law allows a learner's permit to be in electronic form and allows the electronic version to be produced to law enforcement. The digital representation must contain the information from the physical permit; see the Digital Permit page for the full electronic-display rules.
If stopped, show the physical permit or an accessible electronic representation. If neither is available, tell the officer that you hold a valid permit and provide the identifying information requested. BMV verification can confirm status, but it is not the same as producing the credential as required by the statute.
If you were cited under the carry/display rule but actually held a valid permit at the time, Maine law provides a dismissal route when satisfactory proof of the valid credential is supplied through the required process. Follow the instructions on the citation or from the court rather than assuming a fixed $100 penalty.
Not necessarily. Maine law allows a §1408 complaint to be dismissed before the answer deadline when the Violations Bureau receives the summons plus satisfactory evidence that you held a valid credential at the time. If the matter reaches trial, the court must dismiss that charge when satisfactory proof is presented there.
Does a dismissed failure-to-produce-permit citation still add points to my record? A dismissal of the §1408 charge means there is no conviction on that charge. It does not erase a separate traffic offense from the same stop if you were also convicted of something else.
These situations show the practical difference between having an electronic representation and having no usable copy.
Follow these specific actions to prevent issues related to your learner's permit.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
