How long do I have to wait to take the driving test after getting my permit in Maine?

The mandatory waiting period depends on your age when you get your permit. Maine learner's permit guide

• Drivers under 21: Must hold a learner's permit for a full 6 months before taking the road test. You must also log 70 supervised practice hours, including 10 at night.
• Adults 21 and older: No waiting period. You can schedule the road test as soon as you have your permit and feel ready.

Mandatory Waiting Period and License Upgrade Rules

Maine's waiting and practice requirements depend on age.

You can move to the road-test stage only after meeting the requirements that apply to your age.

Do 18–20-year-olds have to hold a Maine permit for six months?

Yes. Maine applies the 6-month permit hold and the 70-hour supervised-practice requirement to permit holders under 21, including drivers ages 18–20.

Is there a six-month road-test wait if I am 21 or older?

No. The statutory 6-month permit hold and 70-hour certification apply to drivers under 21. A driver 21 or older can request the road test after getting the permit when ready.

Purpose of the 6-Month Waiting Period

The mandatory holding period for drivers under 21 is based on safety data.

• Allows new drivers to experience varied Maine road conditions, including winter weather.
• Builds muscle memory for safe driving habits like scanning and braking.
• Supervised practice time significantly reduces crash rates for young drivers.
• Develops judgment for handling unexpected situations like deer crossings.

Using the Waiting Period Productively

Use the 6-month instruction permit timeline to prepare thoroughly.

• Log all 70 hours: Use the official BMV log sheet with a supervisor's signature.
• Practice in different conditions: Drive at night, in rain, and on highways.
• Master test maneuvers: Practice parallel parking, three-point turns, and smooth stops.
• Study the rules: Reinforce knowledge of road signs and right-of-way rules.

Save Time: Schedule a mock test with your driving instructor or supervisor at the 5-month mark to identify weak spots like hesitant merges or poor mirror checks, giving you a full month to correct them before the real exam.

Exceptions and Violations That Affect Your Timeline

Violations that extend your wait: Getting a ticket while on your permit adds time to your minimum permit holding period.

• Example 1: Maine requires no moving traffic violation convictions within the six months before your road test application. A conviction during that window prevents license issuance until the violation-free window is met.
• Example 2: Maine law requires that you have no moving traffic violation convictions in the six months immediately preceding your application for a driver's license.
• Example 3: Operating without a proper supervising driver results in loss of permit privileges; you must re-apply for a new learner's permit after the suspension period.

Consequences of testing too early: The BMV will not allow an under-21 applicant to take the road test before the 6-month holding requirement is met. There is no separate ordinary road-test scheduling fee to “lose”; the Class C examination fee includes the first road test. A separate $35 charge can apply to a missed examination appointment unless it was properly cancelled at least 48 hours ahead.

Does turning 18 remove Maine's six-month permit waiting period? No. Turning 18 removes the under-18 driver-education requirement, but the 6-month hold and 70-hour practice rule continue until age 21.

When Should I Submit My Maine Road-Test Request?

Do not use a normal branch scheduler to book the Maine Class C road test. First become eligible, then submit the correct road-test request document to BMV.

Road-Test Request Timing

Under 21: after completing the 6-month hold and 70-hour requirement, submit the completed MVE-21 driving log. Age 21+: submit the road-test request card from the learner's permit.

BMV then schedules the road test at a testing location nearest you and sends an appointment notice. Appointment availability can affect the eventual test date, but it does not change the date on which you first become eligible.

How do I get a road-test appointment once I become eligible?

Submit MVE-21 if you are under 21 or the road-test request card if you are 21 or older. Maine BMV then assigns the testing location nearest you and mails the appointment notice.

How Does Maine BMV Schedule the Road Test?

Maine does not use a normal self-booking model for this road test. Send the required request card or MVE-21 log when you are eligible, then wait for BMV to assign the appointment.

After You Request the Road Test

Keep your mailing address current and watch for the BMV appointment notice after submitting the road-test request. If you need to change an assigned appointment, follow the contact instructions on that notice rather than shopping among branches for a different slot.

What to Bring to Your Scheduled Maine Road Test

Bring your valid learner's permit and the BMV examination appointment notice. Use a properly registered, insured, and roadworthy vehicle, and arrive with the licensed accompanying operator required by BMV.

Detailed vehicle standards and paperwork belong on the Vehicle Requirements and Road Test Documents pages.
