Maine Permit Test Retake Policy: $35 Reexamination Fee and Attempt Limits (2026)

Failing the Maine permit test means you will need another examination. Follow the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) instructions for your next attempt; current public Maine BMV guidance does not publish a specific minimum waiting period after a failed Class C knowledge test. After Failing the Maine Permit Test

After a failed knowledge test, review the topic areas you missed and use Maine's official study material before your next attempt.

• Review weak topics: Use the Maine Driver's Manual and official practice questions to focus on the areas you need to improve.
• Follow BMV retake instructions: Use the reexamination directions BMV gives you after the failed knowledge test. Do not use the separate road-test receipt process as written-test retake instructions.
• Plan for the reexamination fee: A Class C noncommercial reexamination costs $35. The fee applies again when another examination is required. See Maine BMV examination fees.

Retake Scheduling, Waiting Periods, and Fees

Maine law confirms the Class C reexamination fee and missed-appointment charge. Current public BMV guidance and the Driver License Examination Rules do not publish a specific minimum waiting period after a failed written test.

• Waiting period to retake: Follow the reexamination directions BMV gives you after the failed knowledge test; do not assume a one-day or same-day rule that is not stated in the current public guidance.
• Attempt limits: Maine's current public guidance reviewed here does not state a maximum number of Class C knowledge-test attempts. See the repeated-failure section below.
• Reexamination fee: a separate reexamination fee applies when another Class C examination is required; see the direct fee answer below.
• Scheduling: Follow the reexamination directions BMV gives you after the failed written test. The published road-test receipt-and-mail procedure should not be treated as the written-test retake process.

How much does it cost to retake the Maine permit test after failing?

A Class C noncommercial reexamination costs $35. Do I pay another $35 every time I retake the Maine knowledge test? Yes. When another Class C reexamination is required, the $35 statutory charge applies again; the original examination fee does not provide unlimited free retries.

What happens if I miss a scheduled Maine permit reexamination?

Maine law allows an additional $35 missed-examination fee when an applicant misses a scheduled Class C examination. That additional fee is waived when the appointment is cancelled at least 48 hours in advance.

Example: A teen in Bangor failed by two questions, reviewed the weak topics, paid the $35 reexamination fee, and passed on the next attempt.

How Many Times Can You Take or Fail the Maine Permit Test?

How many times can I take the Maine permit test? Maine's current official sources do not publish a fixed maximum number of Class C knowledge-test attempts. The same published rule answers How many times can I fail the Maine permit test? and Is there a maximum number of failed attempts?: no separate maximum-failure count is stated. What happens if I fail the Maine permit test 2 times? or What happens if I fail the Maine permit test 3 times? Continue under BMV's normal reexamination process; current official sources do not publish a special two- or three-failure cap, and there is no special $20 fee tier in the current rule. Fee details are covered above.

After repeated failures, pause and review the topics you are missing instead of immediately repeating the same study routine.

How Should You Prepare for a Maine Permit Test Retake?

Use the time between tests effectively to avoid repeated permit test failure consequences.

Study and Practice Strategies

• Focus on weak topics: Review the parts of the Maine Driver's Manual that caused trouble on the first attempt.
• Use Maine-specific practice: Work through targeted questions instead of repeatedly taking random tests. For deeper study, use the dedicated Maine practice tests, driver's handbook, and hardest-topic guides.

Before test day, practice with Shoro AI's Maine learner's permit prep to prepare better and aim to pass on your first attempt.

Keep the retake process separate from the road-test process. Follow the written-exam reexamination directions BMV provides after the failed test.

Common Maine Permit Test Retake Mistakes

A common mistake is assuming the original examination fee covers unlimited tries. It does not; use the retake-fee section above for the current reexamination charge.

How Can You Avoid Problems Before Your Permit Retake?

Keep the retake process simple and focused.

• Use the current application form if BMV asks for a correction or resubmission: Maine's current noncommercial Class C application is MVE-64.
• Follow BMV's retake directions: Do not assume you can choose a branch, book an online morning slot, or use road-test rescheduling instructions for a written-test retake.
• Review the rules you missed: Use Maine-specific study material for the weak topics rather than adding unrelated road-test practice to this process.

Example: An adult learner in Augusta failed their first test on OUI laws, focused on that topic before the next attempt, and passed.
