Yes. Maine learner's permit guide
New drivers in Maine must get a learner's permit before the road test. Drivers 18-20 are still subject to the under-21 permit waiting and practice requirements; those rules change at age 21.
Maine does not set a maximum age for a standard Class C learner's permit. Adults who are learning to drive can still use the permit process.
Yes. A first-time driver still goes through the permit and examination process before the road test. At age 21 or older, the six-month waiting period and logged-practice-hour requirement do not apply.
Maine's minimum age for a Class C learner's permit is 15.
Yes. You may apply for a Maine learner's permit at age 15.
| Age Group | Permit Hold | Practice Hours | Driver Ed |

| 15-17 | 6 months minimum | 70 hours, including 10 after dark | Required before applying for the permit |
| 18-20 | 6 months minimum | 70 hours, including 10 after dark | Not required |
| 21+ | No 6-month wait | No logged-hour requirement | Not required |
| Age Category | Learner's Permit Eligibility | Key Point |
|---|---|---|
| 15-17 | Eligible | Driver education is required before applying. |
| 18-20 | Eligible | Driver education ends at 18, but the under-21 waiting and practice rules continue. |
| 21+ | Eligible | The 6-month waiting and logged-practice-hour requirements no longer apply. |
What happens if I turn 18 after applying but before getting my permit? An applicant who applies before 18 should already have completed the under-18 driver education requirement. New applications made at 18 or older do not require driver education. Maine does not publish a separate pending-application exception, so follow any BMV notice if your age changes while the application is being processed.
At the Bangor office, a non-custodial parent drove Lily to her appointment, but the custody order on file named the custodial parent only. The BMV denied intake; the custodial parent had to appear in person, and the next available joint slot was 6 days out. Maine BMV reads the actual custody order - a parent's verbal claim does not override it.
For applicants under 18, the MVE-64 must include the required parent or guardian signature. The application can be submitted according to BMV instructions; the signature is not described as a universal in-front-of-clerk requirement.
Maine's slot-cancellation policy caught a Biddeford family off guard. Mom's car broke down on I-95 and they arrived 28 minutes late. The slot was cancelled on the clock; documented breakdowns earn no exceptions. Joint rescheduling took 7 days.
| Document | Minimum Age | Key Difference |

| First license at 21+ | 21 years | A first license issued at age 21 or older is still provisional for 1 year. |
Yes. Maine law allows a person age 15 or older to apply. If you are under 18, you must complete an approved driver education course before applying.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
